Why? For fear that the student loan police will raid me? The school/bank takes a gamble. Not my fault they decided to give someone (me) $120K, to attain a degree (Liberal Arts) that is utterly worthless--so worthless that I have to go to some obnoxious Asian country to get work. Sorry, if my own country can't provide a job that will allow me to pay back the loan, no...they don't get to have my money. |

Who would want to do business with a con man who stole over a hundred thousand dollars? Maybe you won't be put in jail, but you certainly aren't going to be anybody's first choice for an employee or a friend, and nobody's going to trust you with money.
You committed grand theft and its "not your fault" that you succeeded? Their security should have been more careful? Tell that to the judge, and let us know what he says... |

Depends on the loan. Is that a serious question? If you're American there are Stafford loans which come in subsidized and unsubsidized flavors. On subsidized ones, the interest is paid by the government until you graduate, but after graduation it starts piling up. Generally these loans are very low interest because they are guaranteed by the US government. But it depends on your bank and on the general state of US interest rates at the time you borrow the money. |

No to mention jejujitsu that your credit is now shot to hell. No more loans or credit for you my friend. Thats going to come in real handy when you want to buy property or are in a pinch.
The loan police won't get you out here but they will visit your family to ask where you went. You can rest assured that your passeport will be flagged and that if and when you go back, you will get a nice visit from them.
You are basically talking 6 figures here. They will try and collect in any way they can.
Ifd your folks get sick and you need to go home...then perhaps you will see how defaulting on your loan can comeback and bite you.
Finally, what is this little song and dance about your country owing you a job because they gave you a student loan??
You made a choice to take that loan. Now, live with it. No one owes you anything.
Now, in Korea you would have had more than the means that pay back that loan. But no, you will instead live it up because you are a little irresponsible runt. |

Wanna bet? No one "visits you" regarding student loans. Or any loan. That was outlawed in the early 60's when banks actually used to send out bruisers to "collect." There were some loan-related deaths by these bruisers hence causing the reforms. Bad credit and garnishment are their only recourse. Can't put you in jail either.

That was pretty harsh, not sure if it was directed at me as well?????
I have a tiny debt of maybe 2500 dollars max and have paid a good 60% of it while i was working when i was younger.
I went and checked the facts afterwards tonight on the internet which confirmed what I though..
In canada and the US you seem to have a pretty tough loan repayment scheme
I went to university in Australia...seems a little more civil...
*You get the loan which is no interest and pegged to inflation...
*You only have to pay the loan once you make 37 000 dollars a year which then 4% of your salary is taken out...
*If you never make that amount you never have to pay a cent and on death the loan is cancelled with no carryover to next of kin...
Glad i went to university in Australia |

Sigh...American degrees are expensive. I owe $28k (4 years at a private liberal arts school), which I don't feel so bad about now, since I am getting my master's degree paid for, and hope it will be same with the PhD programs I am applying for now (if I don't get funding, I'm not going).
Question: While I will probably go the PhD route, and be in deferment for another decade (and accumulate a ton of interest) occassionally I think about getting some kind of job with the government that would forgive my loans. I don't want to do any of the jobs they list on their website that would get all or most of my loans forgiven (work in an inner-city school, etc.) but if I did the foreign service or a different civil service job using foreign language skills they claim they are desperate for, wouldn't I get some of my student loans forgiven, or similar perks? |

I don't think that it was directed at you! Sounds like you're paying your debts. JeJuJitsu is a thief who stole $120,000 (US?) from an innocent bank and is claiming it's their own fault for trusting a con man like him.

That's relative. My Stafford loans are by far the best loan terms I'll ever get in my life - except perhaps borrowing money from my parents - the interest is less than 3%, and drops to less than 2% if i make every payment for three years. That's cheaper than money for goodness' sake. And they're very willing to give me a deferrment if I'm in financial hardship, and let me borrow more to go to graduate school.
Sounds like you Australians borrow money from your government directly. We borrow from normal banks, but the terms are good because the government guarantees the loans, basically free insurance for the banks. |

| A big motivating factor in my making regular monthly student loan payments is that the U.S. government will deny you from getting a passport - and possibly void your current one - after the loans go into default. My loans still total about $24,000, and I pay about $170. a month that automatically is withdrawn from my checking account. It's a twenty year loan. If I owed over $100,000 like "JeJuJitsu" I would get the maximum duration loan (I think thirty years) and after consolidation pay the lowest monthly payments you can get - and pay it at least a few times a year and keep asking for deferments and forbearances to at least keep the loans from legally defaulting... |

It was not directed at you at all.
The moron who just defaulted on 120 000$ was the target. To him: you really think the bank will forget this amount just because you took a little trip.
They will flag your passeport..no doubt there.
If you have any kind of account or credit back where you come from that will be frozen and your credit will be shot to hell. No doubt there, thats a certainty.
You defaulted on a loan...thats credit fraud...good luck. |
