Hi y'all.

I'm looking to learn Korean throuh teaching rather than self study through a book... Ideally I want a friend in Incheon to teach me. Rather than paying can I pay "in kind", i.e. teaching the teacher english or their child english? Or will that = illegalness?

Why not just accost strangers on the subway and practice on them?

No, a language exchange is not illegal. You could look in the Korea Herald personals column or advertise there yourself.

As long as you don't get paid money for it I think you're fine.

Self-study through a book is okay though. Do both I say.

Korean is such a regular language that you really will be surprised by how much you can learn with some good books and plenty of writing practice. And then the sense of accomplishment from going out and using it in conversation is just awesome, more so than talking to a stranger with the grammar you just learned from your tutor.

I agree that self study is very useful, but you do need someone to teach you how words and expressions are used. Very often, it is impossible to get this information from books. The best way to study is to have a Korean teacher explain how words and expressions are used, and then practice conversations based on that. When I study alone it is to review what was learned during class time, and make new sentences based on that.
