A very interesting article published in the EL Gazette about immigration paying cash rewards to people who nark on illegal teachers can be read here: link to EFL-Law removed -- but you'll need to register first (only takes a minute).
Unfortunately, the article cannot be viewed on Dave's because of copyright laws.
Mod note: EL Gazette is a subscription-based newspaper on the ESL industry. EFL Law has scanned an article from that newspaper and has copyrighted its use to themselves. As there is no mention of expressed permission from EL Gazette to allow EFL Law to scan and display the original article on their forums and attach their own material copyright to it, we kindly ask for interested readers to respect the original publishers at EL Gazette and register with them if you wish to read their articles. |

You will notice that the mods already deleted my thread about this yesterday.
Another thread about it can be found in EFL-Law, as well as a link to an article.
I was given no reason as to why my link was deleted. |

EFL-law.org: that's where my link leads to.
I'd say the thread was deleted because of copyright issues.

So which mod sock are you?
And why did you not simply tell me that was the reason why? |

He's no mod sock. He's the guy who advised us your post infringed on a copyright. |

Again, how difficult would it be to simply say that the reason was a copyright issue?
It might keep such issues from happening in the future.
Why the obsession with secrecy in regards to deleted posts? |

Interesting - I won't be going back to efl-law precisely because of this, though on this site when a thread was frozen I was informed why by a mod. It does make a world of difference. |

If the mods omitted to pm you and tell you the reason quickly, our fault. Sorry!
Your thread was moved to the mod forum, not deleted. In the mean time DougieG started this new thread with a link to the article, which is evidently not a copyright infringement. |

I can respect EFL law wanting to keep their material copyrighted, however I find it petty when mods here hack and slash posts without any explanation. Only got angry because it happened to me before as well. |

Scanning and posting of an image from a newspaper in a discussion of the event would fall under fair use and thus not be a copyright violation.
In contrast to the clear copyright violations in use by the use of the avatars most people use here. |

The only reason I brought this to the attention of the mods was the huge copyright notice on EFL-law.org. The article is not available on the web (I checked with EL Gazette), so I assumed that perhaps the gazette and EFL-law had some release arrangement. Better to be safe than sorry ... maybe a mod could drop EFL-law an email and ask. |

I saw that thread before it was deleted and I appreciate your annoyance. I expected it would have stretched to three pages by now if it had remained. And if it had, I was going to ask whether any of the regular posters here could confirm the existence of the foreign teachers who were mentioned (by full name) & quoted in that article. Not that I have any serious grounds for doubting its veracity, but people have developed a probably healthy knee-jerk reflex to demand confirmation & clarification whenever these fear-mongering stories appear. Personally, I wish the copyright question can be clarified so as to permit that thread to be re-posted. |

I don't want to be a wet blanket, but I'm disappointed this thread was not about ratting out foreigners for money. If possible I'd like to get it back on track.
The article I saw said the 'bounty' for turning in an evil ESLer is W2,000,000. That's basically one month's salary. A guy with the right inside information could forgo a regular job and just be a bounty hunter. Hang out in the bars in the evening and get names and phone numbers. "Have cell phone, will travel" Paladin.
Some cynic said that everyone has his price. I'm curious at what price you would sell out an illegal teacher. I wonder if there is a direct relationship between the level of moral outrage and the price you would demand for turning someone in. For example, if you are the sort that jumps up and down spitting nails when you hear that someone is teaching illegally, would you rat out the teacher for only the price of the phone call? Conversely, if you could not care less about whether someone was teaching illegally, would you have 'em busted for W10 million? (Choose your own numbers.)
Since posing the question to myself I decided this:
a) I don't give a rat's ass if someone teaches illegally. If someone can pull it off without anyone noticing that you have no training and no background, then either the job doesn't require it or you are good enough without it. More power to you. So, no, I won't be actively hunting you down.
b) If I have a good relationship with you, but you are teaching illegally, I won't be turning you in. Friendship is priceless. Your secret is safe with me. Hint: buy me drinks from time to time and be nice to me. Keep in mind there are only 12 shopping days till Christmas. Size really doesn't matter between friends.
c) If I don't know you from Adam or I do know you but don't like you (for whatever reason) and the government raises the bounty to W10 million, I'd suggest you start packing your bags. Pronto. If you are one of those too cool to say 'hi' to a stranger on the street, mayhap you'd be better advised to pull your head out of your ass long enough to say 'howdy, stranger'. It might be me.
I'm expecting the ones who say we are all here for the money to back me up on this one. I suggest we get together and send Immi a big expensive Christmas card for opening up a new path to riches.
I'm also expecting support from all those who have taught privates. This is better income at a much higher time-per-won rate.

Oh I love these moral dilemma questions. I'd really like to believe that I couldn't do it for less than 20 million if I were really desperate, in which case I'd split it with the injured party.
If it's 2 million and the fine is W500,000 and deportation, could you rat yourself out when you were ready to leave? |
