Quote:
The Bank of Korea (BOK) will issue new 5,000-won banknotes on Jan. 2, the bank said Tuesday.

The bank plans to distribute some 80 million 5,000-won bills among banks for public use. People can exchange the old notes with new bills at the central bank.

The bank said ATMs would not accept the new notes because their size is smaller than the old ones. Banks plan to introduce new ATMs that can accept new notes in the first half of 2007 after the BOK issues new 10,000-won bills, BOK officials said.

Don't tell anybody but they look Japanese to me.

Maybe they should use the same technology to introduce bills worth more than ten bucks!

i just did a journal topic with my kids - design the new 50,000 won note.

they were to explain who would be on the front, what korean place would be on the back, and which korean cultural symbol would be on the front left.

it took a good ten minutes to explain why it's a good idea. i needed to draw pictures.

Weatherman, I believe they were referring to, perhaps a 20,000 won bill. Thanks for coming out.

Why is it that every time a country redesigns its currency, it winds up looking worse? I went to the money room in the Smithsonian. You walk through the eras of American money and watch it get progressively more like Monopoly money.

If you had said Koizumi, she probably would have started a protest.

Actually there was a newspaper article on Monday (JoongAng Daily) talking about removing some 0s from the currency. (As well as potentially issueing a bigger note or several).

They've been talking about this off and on for a couple of years. I thought they had decided to actually do something. But maybe not.

I think that's a polite way to say devaluing the currency like the Mexicans did to the Peso. The won is going down like Paris Hilton at a frat party.

The won is going up for me, but I can't think of as good a line as yours: Going up like a hot air balloon just lacks the pizazz.
