I'm in the south of Korea, Changwon (near Busan), and I'm trying to get hold of a turkey to cook up for a Christmas lunch (I have a real oven with a rotisserie). I was wondering if anyone knows where I can buy one or order one anywhere in Korea. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

And while Im at it, a traditional Christmas cake wouldn't go astray.

Thanks. Merry Christmas and a Happy New year to all.
Very Happy

If you have any contacts in the US army try to get a GI to pick you one up...cheap cheap cheap, if not you can buy them in Itaewon at Hannam market for about 80,000 won each or there is an online place that raises and sells turkeys in Korea as well (and is also expensive)

At Thanksgiving (late Nov.) I posted an e-mail address for ordering turkeys. Sorry though. I don't remember which thread it was on.

I just got mine at Costco in Daegu. If they have them there, I'm sure they would have them at all the Costcos. Plus, I heard that Walmart may have them - but perhaps that is just a rumor. Definitely Costco. 30,000W 11 pound turkey!!! Yum!!!

For a more affordable option, try the Hannam Supermarket, which sells frozen turkeys for 40,000 won to 50,000 won. The market is located in Hannam-dong near exit 5 of Hangangjin station. The nearby Haddon House Supermarket, also offers birds of various sizes from 22,000 won to 90,000 won.

That's what I found in the paper last month. It won't help you in Changwon, but may be of help to others in Seoul or nearby.

Walmart Daegu doesn't have them. I could get one of the teachers at my school to take me to Costco, but the problem is that no one in my circle of local waygookin friends has an oven big enough to cook one. There's a turkey farm just down the road from Cruisemonkey's place - I know how to catch them and the teacher at the boys school in my town knows how to clean them. Maybe we could find one small enough? Or maybe we could just go chat up the farmer.

Did you know that you can throw a live turkey about 20 feet with some degree of accuracy, maybe even further if it's not too big?

How did you discover that?

As for where to get a cooked turkey- maybe one of the big hotels in Busan will sell precooked ones?

My plan is to cut it in half length wise, put it on its side, stick a few onions underneath and cook away. Hope it turns out okay! Its the first one I've ever done!!

Before I came to Korea I worked for a month for a poultry handling company just because it was the only one-month job I could get. Talk about the dregs of society - potheads, alcoholics, criminals, losers, and few really fun guys. I think I had more post-grade-10 education that the entire crew combined. The idea that I was going to Korea just seemed so bizarre to them. But it was nice to know that a smug PhD dropout like me could still keep up with demanding physical labour. It was funny how many of the best catchers were the riff-raff of society and then some clean-cut guy who couldn't find a better job would come along and couldn't hack it for an hour. But at least I can add throwing a decent turkey to my CV.

You can really cut down the space a turkey takes up by cutting the back of the turkey...then split it into two halves...

I cooked a turkey in a toaster oven this way in Hong Kong (big toaster oven) and everything worked out fine. You can use the back to make turkey soup afterwards...

As you'll have noticed, I didn't come down yesterday. However, I've not forgotten you and I'm going to visit Costco maybe today and get you a turkey if they have one. Then I'll be down next week.

another way to cut down on space for a turkey is to debone it. Done right you can 1/2 its size and greatly increase the amount of stuffing you can fit in it.

Start from the back Wink

I went to Costco (Seoul, Sangbong) Tuesday and they didn't have any. My friend called me from the same Costco yesterday (Wednesday) and they had some. I've brought one down to friends (BigBuds and just because) in Changwon and there's another in my freezer back in Seoul, which I've no use for. So, if you'd like your own turkey (British) this Christmas, make me an offer and I'll sell to the highest bidder! No oven? You can come over and use mine, included in the deal!
