for the hagwon teachers out there, what's the latest that you've been paid? (a couple days, a few weeks, months?!?)

Piad on time in my current contract.
In the previous two contracts, pay was always late. Time of delivery ranged from between 4 and 28 days. |

| My director paid me a couple days late my first two months, after I'd reminded him to pay me. After the 2nd time, I sat down and wrote out a paper explaining that in the US, I never had to ask for pay from my employers, and that they'd pay me on time just as I show up to work on time and fulfill my obligations. Never been late again. |

My boss stopped me today and said "You know... I've heard... some people say... that many foreign teachers have gotten paid late this time of year... some of them even a month later..."
She has been later with my pay each month, and was two weeks late last month. I fear that this month will be worse. She hadn't even paid rent on the hagwon building as of my payday (last Friday) when I got a whopping 300k of my salary.
I plan to go to work in China for the new semester after lunar new year. So basically what I'm thinking is, if she pays me I'll give at least a month's notice, but as long as she's behind by (owes me) a significant amount, I won't advertise that I'm leaving. It's a murky ethical area, what do you think? |

Pay late? Welcome to Korean hackwons.
That's the one Korean custom I absolutely refuse to adapt to, paying the waegukin late.
I give 'em a three day leeway.
After that; no pay, no teacher. |

| I was paid about 12 hours late once. "Oh. Today's your payday. I'll deposit the money tomorrow." Once. I beat frying pans on the kitchen counter that night, screamed and yelled, etc. Then I made him pay me early the next time and called him three or four times to make sure he deposited it. On a Saturday. No way I'll accept that. No goddamn way. |

Uh..
Two things occurred to me.
1. Someone I know who runs a private academy told me it's almost impossible to find a foreign teacher to work for her who cares about something besides money (i.e. teaching).
2. Your maturity level must be lower than your students'. |

I didn't get paid late a second time. Who's more mature. I beat on the metal kitchen counter loud and the landlord came up and I told him to call my boss. Didn't hear anything until I went in the next day. Boss told me my landlord complained. End of story. I don't like getting paid late. Confronting people here just causes problems later. Better to let the neighborhood know. Especially when you have your boss cornered. I'm mature enough to know how to corner people here. And I've only been here less than a year.
I don't understand point number one. |

In 4 years here never had 1 hassle with pay...i think the latest was one day due to an honest reason and the wonjang came through with the goods the next day...

That's the thing. Very true. I don't give any days late. I was paid late because once because he "forgot" or "didn't have time". He was just probably trying to see my reaction though. They lie to you to see your reaction. See what they may get away with. I draw the circle and don't let anyone step in. When he tries, I scream. And they try. And they do. That's where the relationship starts to evolve. The pay is fucking straight forward though. Don't pay me late! The time that I was, it could've been 6 hours late. I don't know. I just didn't check until the next day after I woke up. It's not like I hurt for the money, but I don't want to hurt because he thinks paying me is a fucking chore. In Korea, you have to cry like a baby sometimes to get what you want. It's not good to put yourself at their level, but sometimes you gotta. I should be paid at 12am on pay day. That's what I think.
I think it's immature to let your boss pay you late twice. Two or three days late twice at that. Grow up! |

Let's see... I wrote a letter explaining my case. You.... beat pots and pans and freaked everyone out. There is nothing mature about that. As I said, it's less mature than your average students, especially if you teach above grade 1. It's sub-human, really. |

I was going to say more, but...
C'mon. These guys deserve a pot banging session evey once in a while. Mine was about a 10-minute incident. It ended up as a "Oops. Sorry" kind of deal. A lot of teachers wouldn't get away with that, but I can. I have a drawn circle. Must develop this circle. Do any other teachers know what I mean? I really have never been paid late except for that once. Could've been four hours late that time I don't know. Just didn't like late. Didn't like it in Canada (not that I ever experience that there) and I don't like it here. Pay me or suffer. I'm not going to write you a letter. *beep* that.

It would be interesting what the 'someone' considers caring about teaching. Is it working more than agreed upon hours for the same pay? Doing extra work on your free time and days off to better your students lessons...again without being paid for your efforts?
Too many hogwans expect FT's to bend over and take it like a Korean.

I say it all comes down to results  if you dont get paid late ever again then do whatever works.
The only problem I have with giving a letter is the assumption that the Korean can read and understand it clearly. |
