Well I was told about it today (here it is Wednesday!) and I said I'd already heard about it from Dave's and said unfortunately I couldn't make it. My supervisor asked why and I said that I had a Christmas party that my wife and I are going to, to which she scoffed at! I also said that since I'm finishing teaching in February that it doesn't make sense for me to go. And finally I said that since I don't work Saturdays that it just wouldn't be possible. I could really careless what they think.

My co-teacher threw the notice at me as she was going to class yesterday afternoon, but didn't have time to 'explain' it... I conveniently 'ignored' it and didn't look at it very closely...
so this morning she called me twice before I got to school to tell me all the details, and I should go home and pack my overnight bag!

I've been ordered to go by the vice-princiPal, so I'm going.
Doesn't mean I'll stay though. Razz

P.S. The notice was sent out on the 9th, got to my Board of Ed or school on the 12th, and my co-t gets it yesterday, the 15th??!! Yeah yeah, I know, it's Korea.... Rolling Eyes

Was there many teachers there? I flat out refused to go even before my co-teacher had finished her sentence. I'm guessing that not many teachers went to it.

I also didn't let my co-teacher explain the details before saying no. She was surprised that I had heard about it, and I told her that I hear about a lot of things on Dave's esl cafe, like the degree confirmation letter that she finally gave me last week. She's been calm and cool to me since telling her I wasn't going, but oh well I won't see her after next week as she doesn't work during the vacation, lucky biatch!

I went on Friday. There were lots of people.
Since I live close, I could easily escape home which is thankful because they didn't rent enough rooms for everyone anyway Shocked

Was it helpful? The second speaker offered up some practical ideas for teaching and was kind of funny.
The first speaker tried to lecture us on culture shock and how to deal with it. It was useless until the audience started to give suggestions to each other and was able to cut his speech short which is fine because the entire transcript is in the booklet anyway.
After getting the booklet and the meal, I had no more reason to stay the night or come back on Saturday.

I think teacher workshops are a good idea and important if they are done right. Transporting hundreds of teachers to a flashy resort and then into an auditorium to listen to lectures is inefficient and wasteful.

There should be small workshops in each city or region in the province with 10 to 15 teachers + any co-teachers who can come as well. This can be done at one of the schools. If each teacher brings 15 copies of a detailed lesson plan with them, and presents it, then you go home with a bunch of new or different lessons. In a small group, we can also discuss strategies and ideas much easier. Also, these workshops should be on a Friday afternoon so we can drink afterwards.
