When you go to bed at night make sure you turn your heating
way down. If you don't you will run the risk of heat prostration
and death. These cold days leave people exhausted at the end
of the day. In many cases their body's heat regulatory system
will totally shut down. You will "cook" on your own bedroom
floor. Dr. Hwang, chairperson of a large international symposium
looking at this "underground" phenomenon, said every caution
must be observed. |

Unlike fans which are the tools of the white devil, ondol has been used by Koreans for about, oh, 80,000 years. So nothing could be wrong with it. |

A friend of mine used a kerosene stove thingie for extra heat. He suffocated from the fumes. Be careful with those things. |

There might be some truth to this one.
I had pneumonia in Korea, and would wake up in the morning in a pool of sweat. My pillow was totally soaked, and I couldn't figure it out. I only had a mild fever at times, but not always. I got it from my immune system being low due to depression, sleeping on a drafty floor, and probably just bad air in Seoul.
I might have been cooking at night. Amazed that I didn't wake up while that was going on. |

Found out later that week that I had Pneumonia. The doctor took one look at my check x-rays and had a cow.

Breaking news -
Another leading Korean scientist has discovered ondol death can be prevented by consuming a moderate amount of kimch shortly before going to bed. Apparently the enzymes produced in the fermentation process help stimulate the body's heat regulatory system (hypothalmus) and bring body temperature back to normal (no matter what the ambient temperature of the room/air). Dr. Foo Lu-Too added "The benefit cannot be derived from consumption of Chinese-made kimchee. The harmful bacteria and parasites present in the imported variety actually speed up, rather than eliminate, the onset of both ondol and fan death." |

... I tried one of those new-fangled bed things, but got a nosebleed because of the elevation. My K doctor prescribed kimchee as a nasal suppository. It works!... and has the added benefit of clearing out one's sinuses. |
