One of my friends from university used to be a host on Much Music.
I know this doesn't count...(deleted).

There's no need to be vulgar. I was just about to delete it because I knew someone with nothing better to do would complain. I guess I was right. |

I was a "background artist" (cough) on Mel Gibson's first hand at directing a film, which was shot near my house. I was in a group with the producer's son, who knew Mel, and so he came over and introduced himself.
Impressions?
Short. Not extremely so, but after watching Mad Max, you'd think he was a huge, tough guy.
A bit off the wall. He jumped up on a picnic table for no apparent reason while we were talking to him.
I've also met Stephen King a number of times, as he's from my hometown and his son went to my highschool for a year. He would come to pick up his son after school in ratty jeans and bright pink Converse high-tops, and they would walk around the block together reading books. Cool. |

My sister and I met and talked to Bill Clinton and Tipper Gore during the campaign of '92 at Strawberry Point, Iowa. Bill stopped on the rope line to talk to us because we were holding my sister's kids. He stayed and chatted with us because we are both teachers (and voters). We talked education policy. He's quite tall and very personable.
Tipper stopped because someone had told her that my sister was wearing a big button that said, "Al is a hunk!" She laughed about it and agreed. Then she took a picture of us. Said photography is one of her hobbies.
(Al and Hillary were down at the other end of the line, so we never met them.)
I met George McGovern once by accident. I wrote about it on the Eugene McCarthy thread. My only impression was that he seemed professional.
I also met Uncle Woody, host of the afternoon kiddie cartoon show on KTVO, Ottumwa, Iowa. He was kind of creepy. |

I met James Cameron a few years ago, extremely down to earth. WE ere walking in opposite directions along St. John's harbour, and said hello in passing. I spent half the day wondering why that guy looked so familiar.
It wasn't until I noticed the blurb in the paper about him being in town and getting ready for another trip to the Titanic and saw the pic of him that I put it together. |

I met D*ck Vermeil, then freshly retired head coach of the Philadelphia Eagles.

Mr. Vermeil had bought himself a 19" color TV at my department store and I had the honor of loading it into his car. I pretended not to know who he was...until I asked for his "autograph". Yeah, he liked that. (He had to sign for it).
My impression: polite, gentleman, mensch, regular guy, none of this "do you know who I am!" about him. |

kirk hammett of metallica. my impression? mellow, friendly, polite. i talked to him in a record store for about 10 minutes. we talked about guitars. he seemed like he really listens to fans who randomly talk to him. nice guy.
james hetfield (metallica). my impression? aloof yet tolerant. he was walking with his girlfriend and probably didn't want to listen to some 18 year old metallica nerd (me) gushing to him about how WICKED RAD HIS BAND IS.
henry rollins. i got a real "don't bother me" vibe from him but he was personable enough and answered all my questions politely.
jon lovitz. a rude jerk.
dana carvey. less rude than jon lovitz.
gillian anderson. she got pissed off and left the arcade we were in because people were ogling her too much. much hotter in person.
john travolta. man that dude is fucking tall.
brad whitford (aerosmith). i got his autograph for my best friend who is a raging aerosmith head. he ripped a page out of his dayplanner and wrote "dear jenni, keep on rockin' with aerosmith" and drew the aerosmith logo and signed his name. friendly dude. very thick boston accent.

Speaking of Gillian Anderson...
In college my friends and I lived across the street from the Shrine Auditorium in LA where the Oscars and other awards shows are often held. Once I staked out a position on the second floor of the parking garage, directly above the side entrance where the SAG Awards red carpet entered the building. I appeared directly over the head of Gillian Anderson. The "ET" hosts interviewing her didn't notice me, but she did, looked up and smiled. I caught a picture, but it's unfortunately not of the smile, just a moment when they were talking.

Billy Gibbons (ZZ Top) met at a bar called Juan Goldsteins in Austin--said hello is about all
Wayne Gretsky--met in a resturant in Florida--just said hello--nice guy
Cling Longley (former Dallas Cowboy quarterback)--friend of mine from Texas, we worked together some years ago, total wild man; can't share stories but here's an interesting one from The Dallas Morning News:

That's funny.
I've met lots of Canadian politicians, the most famous probably being Frank McKenna (the current Canadian Embassador to the US). Very warm and intelligent man. He grew up a few minutes away from my hometown in Canada. Ironically, last time I saw him was in Texas. |

Yeah I was at school with an athlete who went on to represent the country at the Gateshead games. He then won the US Collegiate games, and is now a trainee coach for a US team..and i won't name him either.
Also I have 2 relatives who are very much in the public eye and the tabloid newspapers, won't name them either.. and several other former friends.
Some nice impressions there. I didn't realise John travolta was necessarily tall or that Mel Gibson did spontaneous silly things..
Ok Heres another one:
Former Ethipian dictator Mengistu haile Mariam
-he may have been in the crowd watching when I played rugby against his 2 sons, who were on the opposing school team.
This was in 1991, after he and his family had been granted sanctuary in Zimbabwe.
-incidentally I knew many sons of famous people (politicians and so on)when I was at school..not really worth mentioning i suppose as I rarely saw their parents. |
