My mom: 54 years old, American, small-town country girl, enjoys gardening and tending animals (but not now, it's winter), likes the outdoors but has all the skiing/hiking/kayaking gear she needs.
Completely different personality type from me. I never have any idea what to get her. Usually I get clothing, a sweater or something. Post your Christmas gift for Moms ideas here...

| This year: a Grundig shortwave radio so mum can listen to Radio 1 and 2 Nederland, and whatever else. |

| my wife's idea: She seconds the radio thing (or CD player), actually the cd player would be better. You can make CDs of her favourite music too, so it's more personal a gift. Unless she already has one i guess, but it's a good idea! |

1 word Joe -SPA
50 somethings seem to love any kind of special treatment they can get at a spa. It's something that few women get for themselves but most seem to love it as a gift. You made it clear that she is the natural outdoor type, but I still think you'll be surprised at just how much she will love it. And don't just get her a facial, I'm talking the 1/2 day treatment- massage, eucalypytus bath, exfoliating, salt glow, shea butter, manicure, pedicure- as they say in Jersey- THE WOIKS. Just look for a spa on the internet near where she lives and they'll hook you up. It'll set you back a couple of hun but you only got 1 mom and isn't she worth every dime of it? |

| I gave my Mom one of those paper mache type lamps they sell in insadong. She loved it ( opened it already) |

| I'm probably going to get shot down but I love gift certificates or prepaid credit cards for mothers. MBNA has a cc you can charge up to $500.00 on and use anywhere Mastercard is accepted. Give her a shopping spree or a weekend vacation...it's her choice. If she's like my mom though make sure you specify that she use it only on herself!!! NO ONE ELSE!!! |

| Kind of late but you can get custom made Chinese style robes/housecoats made in Itaewon. Its down by the McD's quality work, good prices and excellent selection. I brought back about 6 of them as gifts and everyone was blown away by how nice they look. |

the family has got enough asian-style things from me in the past years. i wonder why my little brother never wears his silk mandarin shirt...
the spa idea is good but i don't even know if they have those in that part of Maine, or how to know if it's a good one. i'll check it out. |

Last year, I was in a similar situation. My mother is notoriously difficult to shop for, and at the time, I was a bit frustrated with the entire process.
I decided to take a chance with the 'clothing option', and selected an item from the mail-order clothing supplier Durkl. To shorten a lengthy bout of praise: The delivery was prompt, and my mother was pleased with her gift. |

Mom's expressed interest in aromatherapy, but been reluctant to buy the expensive oil. So ... she's getting a book on the subject, plus a 13-oil starter kit. And if she starts reading and decides aromatherapy isn't her cup of tea? Well, she's also getting an assortment of herbal teas so she can decide what, precisely, IS her cup of tea.  |

I do think my mother would be highly amused by this tee shirt from Durkl:
... as she is a Maine-iac like me and deer often visit the farm. But, I don't think she really would wear it very often! She hasn't been a frequent tee shirt wearer these past few years. |

I really like this idea, thanks. Was it a book + starter kit combo, or did you buy them separately? Are they on Amazon? |

I got my Mom some things from The Body Shop (i figure their shipping is more predictable) including an aromatherapy gift. Later I came across the Discovery Channel store and found a pair of waterproof digital camera binoculars that I got for Mom and Dad both... they were $200 but I know they'll love them.
Interestingly, as I was shopping online, the deliveryman came with a parcel from my parents for me. I haven't opened it yet. |
