yeah, i taught a family of ethnic turk refugees from russia earlier this fall here in the States. Good people.

As for Syria, it is the only time I've been told by a waiter, "Give me what you feel you should pay for the meal." I gave him 4 bucks, which was pretty standard for a decent size dinner at a mid-level restaurant there. "No that's way too much," he replied and gave me half of it back.

Why do you guys consider a large Islamic community as being a
problem?

Because almost every country with a large muslim population (5-10% of the population) has serious problems. That's simply an observable fact.

No, but a significant minority do, and that minority will always exist if you have a sizeable muslim population. The only way to avoid such problems is not to import them in the first place.

So I assume England kicked all the Irish out when the IRA were running amok?

OK, but it's a shame you won't see the inevitable pithy comments about you. Shocked

Completely unrelated example. The Irish had a specific political complaint for one thing. Secondly it WAS the IRA, and organised terror group, not civilian Irish. Thirdly, no one is suggesting kicking anyone out, just not letting more in.

Guys, I am sitting in an internet cafe in Egypt right now.

Two months ago I would have thought differently, but after traveling about Morocco and Egypt for the last six weeks, I have no more sympathy for these crazy Muslims. Alexandria is the only city in Egypt which is livable (thats a travel tip, and don't even think about going to Morocco unless you want to die), I honestly had no idea that such violent, religiously fanatic people existed on earth. Yes, there are decent people, and a lot of the young people are okay, but everyone posting in this forum about Arabs and Islam, don't say anything until you come out here. Yes, I have heard that Syria is not too bad to visit, but honestly, 80 percent of Arabs are just crazy angry theives (AliBaba and the Forty Theives, not forty Lovers) in fact yet another fight is breaking out behind me now as someone tries to "jew" the internet cafe out of a dime. Sorry PC posters, come out here and see what's going on before you vent your totally ignorant oppinions. Big Vern, I disagreed with you a few months ago, but now I know you are right; Europe is in ruin and decay, who do you think it was rioting in Paris, who do you think is genociding the Africans in Soudan? Phuck Islam.

culture shock's a bitch huh?

Gotten ripped off a few too many times in Egypt? Dudes in Luxor drive you nuts a little too much? Offered a felucca one too many times?

Never saw a fight in the tens of times I was in an internet cafe in Egypt.

Egypt does suck if you stick to touristy areas. Did you get to Sinai at least? Not so bad there. Morocco isn't much better. It has the worst touts of any place I've been to.

Obviously having to barter for a pack of cigarettes is not cool, however, once you get off the big tourist trail things calm down a lot; be that as it may, things like free press (the big issue now for Turkey trying to join the EU), covered and segregated women, racism, and deep, deep, deep religiosity are not the path that Westerners are going up, and maybe we are all wrong, but regarding a post just above, about being careful about who you associate with around the mosque in Itaewon, if you are pro-freedom (what ever that means for you), don't let the dictatorial Koreans stop you from having Muslim friends. In fact make a point of it, to show us, and them, and everyone else that we can all get along. Going off topic a bit, (sorry, forgot his name), there is one (if not more) artist in prison now in Korea who is charged with obsenity, I couldn't see his work, but from the discriptions, it sounds like it might be shown in publc galleries back home (merit permitting); that he is in jail is too bad. Or take the old ES website closure, we ought to be fighting the forces of un-freedom be they in Korea or the Middle-East, and even though there are so many decent and good Koreans or Muslims, if you have made that (arbitrary) choice to stand up for freedom and Western values, lets get on it, for starters: at least these Arabs are smoking weed; next month, I suggest we all go down by Seoul City Hall and get stoned.
