have you even ever been anywhere outside of the concrete cities in Korea?
despite the heat and humidity of the summer, there are lots of nice places to see, i wouldnt call Korea ugly
i think temples look nice in the winter as well as in warmer weather and there is also skiing and mountains |

Seoul is fantastic during the lunar new year. Just about everything is open, but there's no crowds. |

The previous poster is right. The temples are beautiful any time of the year. I think Gyeongju is a great place to visit with all of its temples and the giant buddha. If you are looking for indoor things, I really enjoyed the War Memorial in Seoul. There are plenty of interesting places to visit in Korea. Its a beautiful country, albeit freaking cold right now. |

Go to Kyeong gu or Gyeon Ju. The ancient Silla capital near Pohang.
You can go hiking on Mount Namsan - many 3 - 8 hour trips. Lovely temples, rock carved Buddhas, great scenery, easy trials.
Or walk about in town and see some amazing Silla architecture. Surely the "museum without walls" touted in the guide books.
And yes, the best yet, the Koreans in Gyeon Ju are REALLY FRIENDLY to 'foreigners'. I've been there about 30 times and every single time someone has been kind or helped me. They have a very good information centre at the train station with excellent maps and english speakers. A great place to relax. But it's F/Freezin now. |

try a small out of the way place like Andong or Kwangju -
I visited both of them in winter (last week of December/first week of January) and the snow and ice actually helps you to realise the beauty of the places....
Bulsuka temple decorated in a nice thin sheet of snow - makes better pictures than in summer - when its too damn hot to climb up to the temple...
If you were photographed on the Great wall of China - would you rather have the Great wall decorated in winter snow - or be seen standing on the wall in a t-shirt and pants during summer??
Winter is great for travelling and visiting these small out of the way tourist wonders and towns - beats summer when every Seoulite is heading to these places to camp and swim... You will find prices cheaper at this time of year also...

I'm going to stay here for my vacation and am thinking about doing a temple stay. Has anybody stayed at one in the winter and did you freeze your body off or was it just fine and not too cold when you were sleeping? |

Personnally i love Kyung ju on Christmas. I've gone for the last few years. We usually stay at the Hilton if we can afford it and ALWAYS go there for dinner on Christmas eve. They do a nice buffet and there's campy Korean style entertainment and free gifts for people who get up on stage and make fools of themselves.
I've even taken relatives and first time visitors to Kyungju on Christmas. Nothing says CHristmas more than a buddhist temple on Christmas morning! Everyone loves it! |
