First of all, I'm happy!! I have worked at a 2 year college and decided to change to a 4 year school (so that I can teach students that actually care 1% more about actually studying), and have been offered positions at 3 schools. Now some interesting facts:

- my new uni only advertised in newspaper but had 150 applications submitted
- They interviewed about 20 people for 2 positions
- I almost have an MA TESL and that was one reason they interviewed me
- They hired me because I am energetic (perhaps feeling can motivate)
- They had westerners with PhDs but did not interview them because they were 50+ and felt that they would not be energetic enough
- Basically to get an interview you needed some qualifications, to get the job you needed energy
- I had no connections inside school to help me

- my old college only advertised on their own school page but had 12 applications
- 4 applications were friends of current staff
- 2 applications are Kyopos with masters
- The hiring person says that they will hire the best person only
- want to hire person with masters
- Kyopos equally OK
- Too young (under 30) is not OK because the Ministry of Education feels that professors can not be qualified until in their 30s

- One other position I was offered had at least 100 applications also for 2 positions
- teaching maturity and experience were most important there

Some conclusions:

- I was also not offered interviews at six other schools
- Looks are not important unless you are very (overweight/disfigured/handicapped/etc.)
- Wearing a suit to the interview is crucial (I saw others dressed casually)
- 6 years ago it was one year in a Hogwon, then on to Uni, now you can not usually get into a uni job unless you have something (teachers cert, CELTA, MA etc)
- Friends help but only in that they can be sure that they are not going to be deceived by some wacky waygookin (see other thread!!)
- Pay is about the same at most unis (12-18 blocks a week, 2.0, some housing or allowance, 3-4 days a week, 2-4 months vacation)

INteresting to know. I know some people who work uni with CVs very similar to yours. Then I've met some who had very little, including one young, blond Aussie who I'm pretty sure was aided by her looks. I wonder, though, with unis trying to farm teachers out to their hogwans and cutting back holidays if they're going to find more people with your qualifications looking at other countries.

I suggest you identify the Korean universities that interest you, go to their website (if they have one) or send your resume in with a cover letter around university recruiting time (early winter and late summer).
