| I took one guy's taxi who was fluent in English. Turns out he had been in the Katusa in the 70s. Another taxi driver told me his daughter was a Canadian citizen. She was married to a dentist in Vancouver. |

| I like how they praise your great Korean language skills after hearing barely a couple of words from you! I was on a roll with nice chatty drivers yesterday. One of them even asked if I was Korean! |

My more interesting taxi stories from the last month....
1. Got in the back seat of the taxi where lo and behold the family is inside, wifey in the front and 2 kiddies in the back out for a night with dad...anyway, proceeded to be the foreign monkey and got a free trip..
2. The next day got into a cab with a guy who has a HAM radio set-up..had to get onto this guys ham radio and speak to all his HAM radio friends....anyway, learned all about HAm radio...
3. Got into a taxi and when i told the guy i wasn't american said he was very happy because all the americans need to be blown off the face of the earth by an atomic bomb and he hopes Kim jong Il will do the honours..when i asked him what about australia, he said, no australia nice, no bomb so i am glad us Aussies are safe... |

Not necessarily. Universities have ham radio clubs, and all the "hams" ("hammers"?) I've met in Korea got into it at a fairly early age. |

I remember another one from a few weeks ago...
This guy ran a red light and I told him he should be careful or he might get in trouble with the police.....he turned to me and told me he was a policeman by day and taxi driver for 6 hours a night.......he said, i can't get in trouble, i am the police....that was freaky...
Just to show he wasn't lying he gave me his police card and said to come to his policebox if i ever have any problems.... |

In all this i have had a lot of good taxi stories too...
The best one was one night was going from Shin masan to changwon(about 15 000 won) pretty wasted...this guy was playing the Beatles and asked to sing along which the 2 of us in the taxi did and all 3 of us had a jolly old time all the way to changwon..
When we got there he charged us 5000 won for the taxi fare and said he was very happy to meet us....that was cool...
Also had a lot of really interesting conversations with some characters. |

I think guys here can have a lot of interesting conversations with Korean taxi drivers. Women can have some problems as many of these guys are byeontae 
I got a great taxi driver the other day who had an English name and loads of foreign friends. We had a really interesting conversation about everything from Prof. Hwang to why rich people can't drive safely in Korea, he was an excellent guy and even helped me move a load of my stuff out of his car and apologised about how big the fare was! It was a long journey so I'd budgeted for it.
For some reason Americans here seem to have terrible experiences with some taxi drivers. When they ask me where I'm from and I say that I'm English they are almost always nice to me, they never fail to tell me that I'm a gent and then we usually have a conversation about the EPL!
On a couple of occasion I've had female drivers and they're really cool too. Sexy, flirty and better drivers in many cases.
Some Korean taxi drivers are complete arseholes but I've generally had pleasant experiences and even a few free rides in taxis. |

In my experience, Korean taxi drivers are among the rudest people I have ever met in my life. They make the rest of the Korean populace seem like sweethearts. Just shockingly rude! If Korea has a negative country image it's in no small part due to these jerks. I avoid them at all costs.
I saw on the news the other day that three American soldiers robbed a taxi driver and locked him in the trunk of his car. Although I in no way endorse such behavior, it does renew my faith in karma. All the obnoxious behavior that taxi drivers deal out on a daily basis was sure to return and kick them on the ass at some point. Must say, I had a good chuckle. |

From the news report I saw two days ago on MBC news, that was just a straight-up jacking by some bruthas. As obnoxious as some taxi drivers may be, I wouldn't chuckle at that kind of ghetto criminality being exported overseas. |

Yes, and now let's watch as Korean cabbies (who will all have heard this news) stop altogether serving black passengers of whatever nationality out of fear. Oh, and then be called racist for it. Karma is rubberised. (Or should that be "carma"?) |
