thewhat,

Don't go!

Stay in town. Go to work on day 365. Hang aroung the hogwan. Anything. But if you do to the airport without getting paid first, I expect you'll be leaving without a significant amount of cash.

Tell your boss you must get paid,
tell 'em that you won't go,
till you're paid you'll stick around,
and they can kiss your ... dontgo!

And the "Dumbarse Post of the Month" Award goes to....(*drum roll*)....

I feel no sympathy for the original poster. Basically, the hagwon has the right to take action because the OP is essentially breaking his contract.

Face it, if you were to stay in the first place, you more than likely would get paid next month. There are other costs such as airfare, etc. that are involved when breaking your contract, hence the nonpayment. By forfeiture of your contract, your severance is in jeopardy.

Any serious need to return home? You might not have a job as you will probably be replaced.

So your boss is sitting in a school with one less foreign teacher. Anyway, if I were the owner, I would definitely find another teacher next month. Do you think she'll wait around for you?

I don't understand how your boss is going to have the patience to wait around 3 months for you to return unless they are very gullable.

You really really do have an excellent ability to make large assumptions from nothing.

Not that I have to answer to you in anyway, and this will be my last response to you, but I have NEVER suggested here, or to my boss, that she shoudl sit around without a foreign teacher for 3 months! Do you REALLY think a school would do that? If so, it's her choice, not mine.

I am leaving. A new full time teacher was found for a year. At the end of Feb, the other teacher is completing her contract and leaving. I will return to take her job.

Simple as that. Betcha didn't think there was an easy solution, didja?

Hi this is my update.

I asked about this early to get an idea of what to do.

I am leavine this week on the 21st
The owners still insist on paying me when I leave because my contract does not end until the 23rd.

How do other people deal with the final pay, especially if you go a day early?

I want to be payed so I can change the money before I go.
The owners insist I do it at the airport. I dont want to do this because I dont want to wait till the last minute, I want to insure Im paid befor I get to the airport.

Its some kind of insult that I dont trust these very proven untrustworthy people.

But they wont budge.
I think theyll rip me off.

When I leave ill be 8am so its too early to call the labour board etc. I think they are well aware of all this and hope I just get on the plane.

I still cant even get any flight info from these people. They play the wife knows , no t\my husband knows game whem I ask.

Im planning to make a stand now but they dont show up to the school now all of a sudden. And I still sit here and work.

I have a different situation but fear the same result.

The last day of my contract is in a couple of days. I fear they will not pay me or not pay my severance because its only been 364 days or some BS like we have no money. I asked to be payed one day early and they insist on paying me at the airport before I go.

The last guy who worked here left eary and got the same "at the airport" story. They did not pay him , said he owed for airfare etc., and he chose to leave.

Who can I call about the severance in Pyeongtaek city outside of suwon if this happens?

Im dealing with an ewha franchise. AVOID IT

Why not just go get an extension on your visa? Do it tomorrow. Tell the boss after you have it in your passport. Tell them you want to stay in Korea for an extra week or so as the astounding beauty of the country has deeply affected you and you wish to stay and enjoy it for a little longer...and you'll pick the money up at the office or withdrawal it from your account here before you leave.

Most honest places will pay you what you are owed on the last day of work if you happen to be leaving a little early. Others, if you can trust them, might deposit/wire the extra that's owed you after all matters (airfare, severance, bills) are settled. Your place's system seems a little screwy to me...are they(the owners) driving you to the airport or something? Maybe you could also tell them that you made other arrangements and that you'd like to be paid on the 20th. Sounds like they're trying to screw you...

Yeah, well, just don't vacate the apartment go to the airport until you've seen the ticket and the pay. If there is a moment to make your last stand, it's when the boss shows up and says "now put all your bags in my car and give me the apartment key". You say "give me my pay and my airplane ticket now" or DON'T LEAVE THE APARTMENT.

The "we'll pay you at the airport" line is one of the oldest in the book of hagwon trickery. I know a few people who got taken for this scam despite my warnings. I know of one person who sued her hagwon boss upon her return in Canada after she fell victim to this crime. She won full compensation.

Yeah, but the odds of getting money after you leave Korea are like 100,000 to 1. Plus, the OP is leaving 2 days early.

I think the OP should call all the airlines and check on the status of her ticket. If she knows the time her flight is leaving, maybe she could change the flight for a week later and get the problem resolved before she leaves.

Or she should talk to the Labor Board now. She's wasting time and still has the exact same problem.
