How about:
Hi. I'm new here.
Canada didn't contribute to the Korean War.
Wait, I didn't say that.
I meant that the contribution was hardly impressive.
The contribution when seen through American eyes...
Wait, I mean, my American eyes
Could hardly be seen as in proportion ipso facto wherefore
Hey, can't we just talk about grammar? |

| ECC has a new slogan "Building for the great future". To me that doesn't make any sense since by definition the future is unknown. I think it's hilarious that one of the biggest schools can make stupid mistakes like that when they employ a couple of hundred native speakers. Bunch of retards... |
And thats my entire point... logically a school would be "Building for a great future", however a sound argument can be made that "the future" will be great(er) than the present if one considers a trend in sociological advancement over the past centuries.... however, a world war that wipes out the species, which I suppose is just as probable as a continued upward trent, is significantly opposing the ideal of "the great future" as far as mankind is concerned (unless you really want to be cynical).
But nonetheless, this is a circular argument, and colloquially both "the great" and "a great" have the same generalized meaning...
Anothing thing I'm struggling to figure out, why do we "play the piano" (can just as easily say "play piano") but we NEVER "play the baseball", always omitting "the"... |

Oh, and I'll say this again, nor have I ever deviated from it... I apologize to those of you who are Canadian and take offense, but well, tis the truth:
Canada played NO ROLE IN ACTIVELY SECURING THE EXISTING MILITARY STALEMATE BETWEEN NORTH AND SOUTH KOREA. WHILE THEIR CONTRIBUTION WAS PRESENT, AND APPRECIATED, IT WAS ENTIRELY UNNECESSARY IN ENSURING THE EXISTANCE OF THE REPUBLIC OF SOUTH KOREA AS AN INDEPENDENT NATION.
Now stop your insipid whining. It's 2005, we exist as a group of independent and (somewhat) intelligent human beings who dont, ever, have to be in agreement with one another... the fact you've been carrying around some sort of pent up rage and aggression to the fact that there is atleast one american in the world who doesn't see things your way is a testament to your patheticism. Now piss off.[/b] |

| n3ptne: Find, buy or borrow the book "Collins CoBuild English Usage". It tells EXACTLY why and where you use "a", "an" and "the". The book is a little pricey, but worth every penny/won/pence you spend on it. It's not a grammar book, but a USAGE book that tells you WHY words are use the way they are...and it's alphabetical! |
