Well I met Uk Hip Hop artist Roots Manuva in an instore in Toronto. I was majorly sunburnt so I looked like I was blushing big time! Embarassed He thought I was English at first, then Ozzy and then he finally got it right..."so your a New Zealander then? Well I'll be coming down there this year" .........hmmm, okay so that's not a direct qoute, it was a while ago and I was in a bit of a daze when I met him. Nzer's and our tall poppy syndrome makes asking for an autograph a rather shameful experience but I did it all the same.

The biggest I've seen, only seen, was robert redford, chillin' on the patio of a cafe in Toronto...I think, but being a bashful canadian, I walked quickly by without staring, or double checking.

I sang for the queen, way back in the day, along with a thousand other kids.

The rest would be minor canadian celebs...for the hockey fans out there, and I mean serious fanatical hockey fans, frank mahovelich used to always come into the store were I work. I was a kid and had no idea who he was. I say his name on his card, but who the hell is that. Still wouldn't recognize him.

There's probably more. The area I used to live in was movie central in TO. They were always filming movies in my back yard. Grrr. Okay, the park near my apartment wasn't really my back yard, but it was, ya know.

I guess celebrities develop their own ways of handling the attention and constant approaches, a bit like some esl teachers I guess. Not many seem to turn down a friendly conversation or blow you off.

Equally notable are the people I've nearly met: missed seeing by minutes.
Former British PM John Major visited my school while i was away: Princess Di visited my town -my sister saw her but i never got out of bed (A saturday). Madonna, Harrison ford, Sylvester Stallone and Jasper carrot all drank in my bar while i was not on shift..only to be told about them later by the other staff...

I met Wilt Chamberlain when I was around 12 at Disney World. Pretty nice guy, took time to sign autographs.

Meet George Clinton while he was leaving an impromptu show in the uni town and as I met him I screamed "You stole the show in PCU!" Needless to say I was quite drunk, but he laughed his ass off from the comment and thanked me for remembering him in the movie.

Played basketball with Dennis Rodman when I was in my early teens and before he went crazy. He was a friendly guy, invitied me to play with him and his friends. He was also spotted around a Detroit area arcade playing games and giving quaters to kids.

Worked in P.R. in the Detroit area and met several musicians. The worst was Madonna, a total bitch. The best were Bob Weir(Grateful Dead), David Crosby and B.B. King. All three were very kind and friendly. Met several others at that job, but I'll keep the list short.

uh...after naming some no-name korean politician, a fast bowler (what the hell is that anyways?) and not-famous bands who you've seen but not talked to, who is left that you WOULD feel silly about mentioning?

are there any brothers of third-place runner-up at the local backgammon tournament that you know? Why not just start listing bands who you've heard on the radio, that's almost the same as meeting them.

Well I personally wouldn't categorise going to a Chumbawamba gig and an Ajax training session as knee-trembling "Wait a second, isn't that....?" celebrity encounters, but sitting next to Floella Benjamin definitely counts.

We spotted numerous football-related famous folk while watching the 2002 World Cup in Japan, the funniest being:

Chris Kamara!

He had just arrived in Sapporo and was wandering around looking for somewhere to watch the second half of France-Uruguay. We told him "It's nil-nil at half-time and Henry's been sent off." He replied:

"Yes well I predicted at the beginning of the season that France would struggle in this tournament..."

We countered "Well you'll never guess what, next week Korea's going to beat Italy, and Turkey will make the semi-finals!"

He said:

'In fact at the beginning of the season I tipped both Korea and Turkey to mount a challenge for the trophy and so it has proved..."

Jealousy about what Rapier? You met some unknown dudes. It just means that ... nobody know them.
Some of the posters met some interesting people but the reservist player for the "fast bowling" team of your country? What is this?

In another life, I was a sound engineer and worked at a pro level for many years. Name dropping is not for me. I met many people that everyone know for sure but I will not try to boost my ego by naming them.
But I met the owner of the convenience store close to my house once and she was taller than I thaught. And we talked for 2 or 3 minutes before another customer arrived. It made my day.

Oh! You met the Khan too! How did you find him? I thought he was charming 'til he killed his help for not sitting properly his best horse at the table ...
Seriously, I really don't know who are Romano Prodi and Sebastian Coe and many of the others. Sorry if I roughen your skin but you should admit that most of the "nominated" are local hero of yours.
For my part, I won't go in the music business since it's too obvious but since you seem to like politic, Jean Chretien, former Prime Minister of Canada, Brian Mulroney, former PM too. Both were in office at the time of the meeetings. PE Trudeau, former PM of Canada, retired at the time. Had a smoked meat with him at Ben's.

I've pretty much only met 2nd rate celebs... and for most of them I didn't even realize who they were until I was told later.

I saw Donald Rumsfeld in DC- we were walking down the street and an SUV with flashing lights and security cars pulled up next to us- he got out and went into Comfort One Shoes. Guess shoe shopping must be a pain in the neck when you're Secretary of Defense. This was right after 9/11 and one of my obnoxious friends wanted to get a picture with him, but the security guy told us he didn't think it would be a good idea.

I sat next to Aaron Neville at the airport- I didn't recognize him, but was just staring at him because he's HUGE and was kind of hypnotized by the Jesus tattoo on his arm. Only later I found out who he was when a friend said "did you realize who you were sitting next to?" Funny, for someone with such a distinctive look (the muscles and the mole) I'm surprised I didn't realize who he was- seems even bigger in person.

I also met the Australian band The Sleepy Jackson/interviewed the lead singer Luke Steel. Cool band, and Luke offered me beer. Seems to hate interviews though- typical withdrawn musician/artist.

Finally, I unknowingly hit on a Lifetime movie star (big deal, right?) at a bar in DC. Thought he was cute, tried a line, he wanted nothing to do with me (his girlfriend was right behind me, oops). Had no clue he was an actor until my friend told me.

Kicked Billy Joe from Green Day out of a bar I worked at for pissing in the flower boxes

Hung out with Les Claypool from Primus at same bar

Played pool with Pat Smear from Nirvana (kind of) at a dive in Sun Valley, Idaho

See Dave Matthews on a fairly regular basis just doing regular stuff (grocery store, taking a walk, whatever)

Saw Christy Turlington walking through SoHo

I'm new to this thread, but if the highlights of these 100 or so famous people are watching Chumbawamba, and having the Queen wave at you then I'm just gobsmacked you would feel the urge to tell people.

This is a new low for Dave's.

I have always wondered why people feel it's something special they saw, waved, or got an autograph of someone famous. Most famous people don't even deserve to be famous (including almost all actors/actresses nowadays, almost all sports stars, etc...). And even worse, there are the people who actually feel special themselves caused the waved at the Queen or something

These people can't have much of a esteem if that is what makes them feel special.

Now, if someone had shot Hitler in the head back when, fine, they can say that. Or if I met Carrottop and kicked him so hard in the groin he could never have children, again, something special. But most of the posts here, I know a lot of people do care, but it isn't really that big of a deal.
