I'm interested where this game came from. I've been playing it in class for about 3 years and it's a great vocabulary building game. I independently invented it as I needed some games that were fun and useful in class, for reward and discipline type issues. Kids love this game.
Did I invent it? I know I've taught it to a few coteachers in the past. Do I know VOL or did he-she independently come up with the same idea.
My rules are slightly different.
You can add a letter, take a letter or change a letter-anywhere in the preceding word, if you 'scupper' someone you get a point. To be fair I vary the rules according to students proficiency in English.
An advanced class can be given points for using the word in a grammatically correct sentence.
Back to the game!

rice. Is that allowed? I let my kids do that. If it's not allowed with vol's rules then sorry. |

Itch!
Sorry I feel I'm cheating. It is quite easy to do the 'scupper' if you're a talented Korean student, clever player like schwa or playing by the basic rules. That's why I've had to get creative with the rules with my students.
It is pretty easy for a native speak to 'scupper' an opponent!
