So here is the situation.

I got a middle school job on a 6month contract in Seoul. It was through one of those recruiters advertising 25kper class etc, and then you get raped because she collects 10k....

Well, I did my research and basically called her on her shady activities, and told her to shove off.... gave her a finders fee of 400k for the introduction, and for setting up the visa.

Anyway, my term is done, and I had asked one of the teachers at the school about resigning. And apparently, they dont know their budgets until Feb. This was fine with me. Until today....

I got an email from the recruiter which had been MIA since September, saying that the school doesnt want to renew my contract, and they want a "change" and my visa will be canceled Jan 2nd, and I have 15 days to leave. Essentially fired....or at the least...a nice "you suck"...

My contract says Feb 28, so I am safe in that regard.

The part that chokes me, is I dont know if she is scamming me...or the school truly doesnt want to renew my contract. I pumped non stop hours into that school, creating lessons for their lack of curriculum, and they appeared to be happy, and loaded me with additional classes for the last 6 weeks........

I called my co teacher, and she said again, that the school doesnt know if they are going to need anyone because of the budget. Noting about them not wanting me...

So my question. Which is more likely?

Scenario #1- School truly doesnt know if they need anyone, cant commit
Scenario #2- The teacher wants to tell me I suck but is just being nice
Scenario #3- Recruiter is pulling something funny. Mixing words, twisting things, so the school doesnt even consider offering me a continued contract so she can sign some newbie and screw him over....

Basically, she had me set up to be taking 5-800k a month as her % as a consultant...... is this enough motivation...?

Im a certified teacher, and had taught in Seoul for 2 years prior to this job. Public schools are not the most demanding, nor the most scrutinizing, jobs out there..... At all my prior jobs I had been begged to resign.

Im trying to shake this feeling that I suck... considering I was thinking about going home in June, and getting a teaching job back home... however......apparently I suck.... and need a change of profession

First rule of working in Korea: All recruiters are liars!
Second rule of working in Korea: All RECRUITERS ARE LIARS!!

Why are you even talking to the recruiter? Talk to the principal at the school....surely there is someone there who can speak enough English to communicate with you.

About the end date for your contract....the labour board would most likely back you up as to the end date of the contract(as its a public school they most lilkely wouldnt want to ignore the 30 days notice.)

As to which is more likely...see rule #1 and #2.

Most likely is the recruiter has lined up another cash cow and wants you out of there so they can start milking the golden foreigner!

You have been begged to resign or to re-sign? I know the difference is suttle in spelling, but the difference in meaning is huge.

If you have been begged to re-sign, what makes you think you are a bad teacher?

Steelhead, all will be well if you edit the thread title to put at least one space in it.

My school is also saying that don't know if they can re-sign me because of budget - and they won't know until late Feb - a week before my current contract is up. Which is useless if I need to find a new job!

But, I'm not sure if I believe them - perhaps waiting for someone better to come along Sad

I bet the recruiter has flooded the school with "highly" qualified teachers resumes in the hope of pimping another teacher out to them. There is really nothing worse than recruiters, they are slimy scum who learn a little bit of English and then proceed to rape as many people as they can. I bet the school is looking for a cheaper option...so stupid that a school can't afford a teacher (of course they can, but they want the cheapest teacher they can find...not the best).

I concur, discuss the matter with the principal through a trustworthy and
sympathetic co-teacher. In the future avoid these independent recruiters
who charge a hidden finder's fee, but if you put your faith in another one
read the small print of your contract with the agent carefully before you
sign it. More reliable and trustworthy agencies like Canadian Connection
and Work and Play are seeking a large number of public school teachers,
preferrably certified teachers, to start next March. These agencies do not
charge a finder's fee and are open and honest with the job details. If you
wish to continue teaching in a Korean public school, although you suspect
that you "suck", contact them through this web site. Write off and forget
about staying where you are The position sounds too insecure for a good
night's sleep. All the best!
p.s. You may not suck as a teacher, but you were definitely suckered by
that recruiter. Scout around next time and do some checking. Cool

So I have contacted my coteacher, and am waiting to hear back from her. I want a meeting with the principal. I am sure the evil doing has nothing to do with the school.

Personally I thought I did an excellent job with my class. Especially given the situation. Thas why its come as such a shocker. I was expecting to enter my second term with some bargaining power(ie get rid of the chalk board which left me everyday coverd in chalk) and a computer with some AV equip.

It makes sense that the recruiter is A) terying to get me fired or B) trying to get me to move on despite my wishes to remain at the school.

either way, if I stay she gets SQUAT. IF I go she could get some chump Wagookin to abide by her lesson fee skim scam......

I do wish to remain at public school....... quite the discouraging experience..

It sounds like she wants to get another recruitment fee from the school.

You have received a real kick in the behind. Sorks, too, I'm sure.

Carry on as if nothing happened -look for another job, a hogwon job even where you MIGHT not get the shaft.

Rock on, Brother, and take it in stride. It appears to be part of the scene, here.

Sorry for messing with your precious board Wangja, I felt like writing without spaces....... so.......

Anyways.......after DavesESl board revives itself from the massive heart attack suffered due to my no spaced headline.......

I like the school, but more so, I like the time, location, and money. Puts me in the perfect position without limiting my lifestlyle.
I will never work at a hagwan again, I would just go back home......hagwans leave this taste in my mouth similar to gay fucker recruiters.

Im gonna take a short period hagwan job next month just to make ends meet, but, I would never ever work full time at a hagwan.... they cant afford me.....More cost efficient to put some regular wagook in class to explain the "lets go" pages........

I hate LETS GO>>>>>>>>
