japan is Ok in winter...not to bad, nothing like Seoul

It seems Japan extends a lot farther from north to south than Korea does, and there are some cold bits. I read that the coast fronting the Sea Of Japan (like Fukuoka) are colder than those facing the open Pacific (like Tokyo). I'll find out!

where you are travelling..the Fukuoka-Tokyo zone on the south coast on Honshu is not cold.....the north-west coast of honshu gets all the snow, the south coast plus Fukuoka gets hardly any...

I used to live in Sapporo on Hokkaido which is in the northand that was frigging cold(siberia cold)...the furthest north you will go is Tokyo which is about 1000 kilometres from sapproro, get a map out, you will be fine...it is warmer where you are going than in most of Korea

Who says I won't go to Sapporo? I've got the JR pass.... I'm as free as a bird, man! Maybe some night if I can't find a hostel room, I'll take a long train ride up there.

It will take 18 hours from Fukuoka to sapporo...so 36 hours there and back out of 5 days...sounds like a great trip Rolling Eyes

Sapporo isn't that cold. It depends on your idea of cold, mind you. Sapporo is a great little city. I was there for a week. My feeling was it would be a great city to live in but you probably don't want to visit there as a tourist for more than 3 days. But the overnight train is something else.

I've always been attracted to the idea of Hokkaido in winter:

Sapporo is frigging freezing in winter....
Minus 20 or 30 degrees for an Aussie like me who is used to the sub-tropics is very tough

Hi Joe,

I lived in Japan for five years and always skipped Tokyo whenever anyone came from abroad to visit. It totally depends on what you are after. Tokyo is cool for people watching, partying and shopping but it is just so huge and overwhelming at first. You only have five days, so if you want culture and sightseeing I'd spend your time in the Kansai area - Osaka/Kobe/Kyoto/Nara. There are so many beautiful things to see in that area. I was still sightseeing in my fifth year living there. If you have time on your way back to Fukuoka jump off the shinkansen and spend a day in Hiroshima or Miyajima island. Anyway, just my two cents. Let me know if you need any more info and I'll be happy to help. It isn't that cold in Osaka in the winter (I guess that's relative to where you're from). I'd say it's about the same as Busan.

Have fun!

Thanks... I'm thinking of taking the shinkansen to Tokyo the evening of the 1st. It'll be evening when I get to Fukuoka so I'll ride overnight and spend the 2nd and 3rd visiting the sights in Tokyo. The guidebook says the imperial palace in tokyo is only open twice a year, and one of those dates is 1/2, so I might see that. I definitely want to people watch and window shop. I'll read the guidebook more while I'm there and probably visit Kyoto on the way back west. I should be able to fill up my time easily.

I have to say, that phrase is near unintelligible. I've heard about Roppongi nightlife and I heard about the sarin gas attack on the subway, but I don't understand how the two fit into the same sentence in quite that way. I will arrive in Tokyo late sunday night or monday, and won't be there for a weekend. I'll probably be back in Fukuoka friday night, that'll be my only weekend night in Japan.

I'm getting excited! I booked a hostel in Tokyo from monday night to wednesday night, figure it'll mostly be a visit to Tokyo. There's so much in the Tokyo area I'm sure I won't get bored. Thursday I might take in another city, perhaps Kyoto, or not, depending. Friday I've got to make my way back to Fukuoka for a saturday morning ferry home.
