Newcomers beware: do not dial 001 to make an international call if you are not a KT subscriber. Most of us are used to a system where international calling codes are based on country, so, for example, you dial the same code to call internationally from the USA no matter whether you have AT&T, Sprint, etc. Here the codes are based on company, so 001 is KT, if you are not a KT subscriber you end up paying your company plus KT, in effect getting double billed. The other foreign teacher at my school was greeted with a 600,000 won bill from KT, in addition to her Hanaro charges, as she was unaware of the existence of a Hanaro code. Internet sites all say Korea's code is 001, they don't mention the company specific codes. The Hanaro guy never told her.

KT also screwed up my bill, claiming I owe them 150,000 won for a month when I made exactly ZERO phone calls (I use Skype). If you are a KT subscriber, I'm sure you've noticed for yourself the bogus rates to make int'l calls, but making up charges is just pushing it too far.

If a thread already exists on this sorry to double post, as I came up empty in the search feature. I just wanted to give a head's up to those who are new here or planning to switch telephone providers.

wierd I've been with KT for 2 years never a problem with my phone or my internet service, its why I switched my cell phone to KTF.

I like 90% of the foreigners here don't use their long distance. I either use a phone card or 008, 00365 and get very cheap rates.

Yeah, they do that to me every few months. I'll receive a bill that says I should pay upwards of 100,000 won for calls to Canada, even though I never call Canada except with my company calling plan...and that's from my home telephone.

Funny thing is, the wife simply calls, tells them they've F'ed up the bill, and they say sorry and leave it at that. What sheisters.

I was on KT's Megapass for over two years before I finally got around to changing. I lost connection many times for no apparent reason and their engineers seemed clueless whenever they came round. I changed to Hanaro and haven't had a single problem.

. . . in effect getting double billed.

I use Dacom for my international calls (land and cell) and this has never happened to me in the 5 years I've called overseas.

I use skype, and although the quality goes down about 1 in 5 calls, or starts to echo, it is well worth the 2 or 3 cents per minute it costs to call the USA. For about $12 US, I get something like 8 or 9 hours of talk time.

My boss claims he called and told them they screwed up. I figured all along he probably called and they said "no, you pay" and he just said "ok."

Banana, go to the Skype page and find out.
Basically, it's a VOIP, a.k.a. Telephony; you can call other Skype users for free, or a land line for a really cheap rate (USA 3cents/minute).
