Wow, there seems to be a lot of people interested in Thailand. I'm going to Thailand for a break but mainly for the wildlife i.e. tropical fish. I'm curious as to where the best locales are for snorkeling and scuba diving. I'm interested in seeing the vast variety of marine life there(Moorish idols, Triggerfish(especially the Titan...albeit a distance away, Parrotfish, etc). Thank you. |

koh samui usually has the best scuba/snorkling. Phuqet also has great conditions depending on the time of year. |

snorkelling in samui sucks big time ... unless you take a 1 hour ferry to koh tao. excellent snorkelling in tao!, but i've heard the diving is mediocre because of shallow depths (15 ft or so). i was told the best place to snorkel in thailand is the koh phi phi area on the west coast, but not sure how the tsunami has affected things over there. enjoy! |

it's not true that the sites are only 5m deep though. chumpon goes down to 40m and most other sites you can easily get 18m+.
i would definitely not recommend samui at this time of the year. water visability can be very low. and you may not even be able to reach ko tao due to rough weather. |
