A newbie checks out the exchange rate daily and is concerned when the rate changes by more than 10 won to the xxx; a long-termer (Seoulite) is more concerned with the 300% increase in subway fares and the general increase in the cost of public transportation since he/she got here 10 years ago.

A newbie can't pee with the public restroom door open.
A long-termer doesn't break his flow when the ajjemma mops around his feet. |

Newbie: Why the f*** can't they see I'm walking on the sidewalk and get out of my way? Who do they think they are?
Oldbie: Two steps to the right and on with life. |

I believe Ya-ta's answer is also the key to a much longer and happier life anywhere |

Guy passed out or puking on the side of the road:
Newbie: "Maybe we should help him get home."
Vet: Nothing...
Ajumma shoving in line on the subway:
Newbie: "What the *beep*'s wrong with this country? They're so rude."
Vet: Shove her back out of the way...
Guy hocking up spit:
Newbie: "Oh my God, these people are savages."
Vet: Geez, my throats a little rough too. (proceeds to audibly clear throat and spit anywhere [at least me]) |

No, only the lazy vets are like that. It is easier to get into the habit, but I have managed to keep the good things I was raised with while hopefully incorporating any good things I have come across here. |

Hahaha. Maybe, I'm lazy but, mostly I just feel like I've assimilated myself. Though I agree there are certain things I still do just because I think they are right. For instance, I still hold doors for people, male and female. Also, I usually let older people go first.
However, I think we have to keep in mind what we think are the "good things" are often culturally biased. |

Newbie: What's that? I've read a three page article about Korean culture. What do you need explained?
Oldbie: Dunno. I've been here ages and 90% of what they do I don't get. I just nod and get on with it. |
