Hi there,

Is there anyone on board who lives or has lived in Kyungju, Korea? I would like to learn some things about the area as I may be headed there soon.

Thanks,

Kate

I don't mean to be a bit of a prat but you have lived in korea before for a good bit of time but you don't know where Kyeongju is???

It is in the SE of the country an hour north of Busan and maybe 4 hours from Seoul on good days.....

It is the ancient capital and to be honest is probably one of the nicer cities in korea but it is a bit quieter so if you need creature comforts it could be a bit tough but both daegu and busan are not that far away.....

It has been spelt "Gyeongju" for a long time now (on everything since at least 2002, a couple of years before that).

I'd gladly sign a six-month contract there, and spend my weekends doing the area justice.

The OP asked where "Kyungju" was in korea.....

Actually there are quite a few places in Korea with a town/city with similar spelling.... how would you be sure you have the correct place the OP is going.....???

(1) There is a "Gwangju/Kwangju" which is a 40min bus ride from Seoul..

(2) There is the "Gyeongju/Kyeongju" which is 1 hour bus ride NORTH from Busan/Pusan.....

(3) There is the Gwangju/Kwangju" that is a 2 hour bus ride WEST of Busan (http://eng.gjcity.net/main.jsp)

So for the above Know-it-all posters proclaiming the correct spelling etc etc - please don't confuse the OP ......

**There probably are more places within Korea with similar-spelling names....

I have lived in Kyongju (I will NOT use the gov't system, except in special circumstances) most of the many years I have been in Korea. It is my wife's hometown. For the past year, I have been next door in Pohang, but KJ is still my Korean hometown.

It is in the SE part of S. Korea, about an hour's drive north of Pusan. If you need any info, please feel free to PM me.

I live in Ulsan which is close to Kyungju and Kyungju is a correct spelling of it. I presonally prefer that spelling to gyeoungju.
Kyungju has about 150,000 people. it has a lot of historical sites around it. Its nice to visit but i don't know about living there.

Hello - my name is Jonathan and I moved to Gyeongju about 2 months ago. This is my first time to Korea so I don't have a lot of other places in Korea to compare it to... Here is my observation of Gyeongju though from the short amount of time that I have been here...

Yes, it is a smaller, more traditional city - population a little over 200,000. It is a very nice, family oriented city. There are a lot of children and I personally have fvound it difficult to meet people my age to go out and have fun with - of course I still barely speak Korean so that has something to do with it as I cant communicate well... I hear there are approximately 50 foreigners teaching English here but I haven't met any and have only seen other Westerners a few times, usually as I'm driving by - I haven't personally met any...

I do think it is nice here and the people are very friendly, lots of nice tourist locations and nice place to ride a bike and enjoy the outdoors...

Overall, I would say gyeongju is nice but a bit conservative compared to what I am used to in San Diego, California, USA. I'm wondering if its the same way in Seoul... Do most 20-30 year old still live at home with their parents in Seoul too?

E-mail me or PM me if you have more specific questions! [email protected]

-Jonathan

the spelling of can be debated, but doesn't even sound that similar to
