I've been fish-sitting for my co-worker. I wanted to clean the fish's bowl, so I drained the water (and the fish) through a colander (metal), then immediately put the fish into a glass bowl of water (which was pretty cold- straight from the tap). He promptly sank to the bottom of the bowl. I don't know what I did wrong. Maybe the water was too cold? He was only out of water for maybe 2 seconds.
I cannot take care of pointsettias, either. My mother said to water them once a week. My friend said to water them every 2 days. I've had them in full sun, and I've had them in low light conditions. Maybe they just don't like living with me, and prefer to quickly escape to plant heaven to be away from me..
What's wrong with me?! |

Okay, now you're freaking out that you'll make a TERRIBLE mother, am I right? But you've spelt the word wrong, Peri. Swap the "B", "L" and "E" for "F", "I" and "C".
(will we be getting a constant stream of these threads in 2006? they're fun! ) |

Don't worry Peri, you are not alone. I kill the plants too. In fact i usually tell anyone who might buy me a plant that I am not so good with them. I've got one student who comes to visit me occasionally even though he graduated 3 years ago and he'll bring me plants. He always announces "I asked the lady which one was hardest to kill and she recomended this one."
As for the fish, I think the water was too cold and the chlorine got him. I learned from my sister (I'm not a fish person), after I almost killed her favorite fish because I wanted to clean out the tank, that you have to set aside a bucket of water overnight at the same height as the fish tank to let the chlorine evaporate and be the same temp as the tank water.
better luck next time |

You put the fish in shock dude or dudette. If you clean fish bowls you need to take water from the bowl put in another container transfer the fish then clean the bowl. Fill up the bowl with new water let it sit for about 30-40 minutes to get to room temperature (Depends how much if its like 10 gallon tank obviously takes much longer). I usually also had an additive that would get rid of most the chlorine. |

So, are you going to tell your co-worker that you knocked off her fish, or just go out and buy another and not tell?? |

yes...you have to let the water they are in be an equal temperature to that you wish to put them in...usually placing whatever you are holding them in into the tank for sometime....

I thought of that! Hmm- good fish advice! I figured it was the water temp. Funny- I can take care of dogs, but not fish. Dogs aren't as delicate, though. Well, now that that's figured out, I can open a small creatures pet-sitting business (fish, gerbils, et all)! I don't know if hubby will go for that idea, though~
Actually, I'm pretty good with plants, just not pointsettias... |

Easy question. You were supposed to let the water sit overnight to let the chlorine evaporate. Doing so also solves the problem of having the water at room temperature, as Hobophobic pointed out. |

Yes, you should have let the water set overnight. Also, there are some chemical drops you put in the water to help it age faster, if you can get it. The water in my area is very hard. I would not drink it, that is for sure! It also has a strong chlorine smell. You probably need the drops.
Another important thing is to check the PH of the water with little paper strips, if you really want to start getting into it. Back home, I had a little kit for checking this, and drops of acidic and basic liquid to bring the PH up or down. If it matches in PH, temperature, and is free of harmful chemicals, the fish will be just dandy in the new water. |

So do some fish. The Zebra Danio's bright blue and silver coloration becomes dull when it's afraid or when the water condition isn't to its liking. |

When you buy a new fish they give it to you in a plastic bag (at least where I come from) and they say, put this bag in the fish tank until the water temperatures match, then release the fish into the main tank. |

I can't believe you had access to the internet yet dumped a fish straight into tapwater. no excuse for that. (I'm baby sitting a bunch of coworkers' bettas myself right now- it's amazing how different they all act, almost to the point of having personalities). |
