Last week my local supervisor (epik) asked me if I needed anything in my apartment. I didnt really -- my appliances are old but functioning. But he pushed me (something about extra budget) to head down to Hi-mart & put together a wishlist. So I priced out a nice new tv, washer, & fridge, submitted the quotes, & forgot about it, not expecting much.
Today he informs me they'll be delivered tomorrow! Thanks boss!
I'm not a big tv viewer but I think this unit will be a serious upgrade over my faltering antique. Its a 29" digital flatscreen, hdtv-ready.
3 questions. Apparently hdtv is going nation-wide prior to World Cup -- I wonder if I'll have to do anything special to have it? Will hdtv be wow or just a subtle improvement? Last question: will some simple cable connection between my computer & the tv enable me to play dvd's on the larger screen? (Sorry if that one's a dumb question -- I am stupid that way.) |

What happened is they didn't spend their entire budget, and the way things work, if you don't spend all of the money you are alotted by the central body of your organization, you won't get as much next time. Thus conserving money is punished rather than rewarded. Every dollar or won budgeted for must be spent, even if spending the money does more harm than good, the money must be spent no matter what.
This is actually a huge problem in Japan because even small rural communities are destroying their environment by building all kinds of infrastructure they don't need simply to preserve their ridiculously inflated construction budgets!
Great to hear you got your pad pimped out as a result. I don't think there's anything special you have to do to use HDTV. The only thing is only certain programs are broadcast in HDTV, so the programs that are not broadcast that way will just look normal. |

The good old "Spend it all or obviously you don't need it next year." thinking. I spent 12 months working in the Federal government in Canada, and this is probably one of the biggest reasons so much tax money is wasted. Why the H3LL can't people realize this does not work? |

For the HDTV question: I actually kind of dislike watching HDTV programs, because it looks a little too up close and personal; but when it comes to sports, HDTV kicks all kinds of ass. It's like being at the sporting event, but without the gouging ticket prices. Watching dramas etc. in HD is a little jarring; you can see all the make-up the stars are slathered with, not to mention the starlets' upper lip and nose hair. In that sense, it's a real dream shatterer.

YES!! And you (or maybe it's just me) can get distracted by dumb things, like that fly buzzing around the actor's head in the outdoor lunch scene, the crater-like pores on people's skin (this is REALLY bad when you combine HDTV and a huge screen). But don't go by me. I prefer films in black & white. |

Delivery got postponed a couple times but this afternoon I was half an hour into a 90-minute class & an office underling interrupts & says the store has to bring them now.
"Um, I'm kinda busy."
Nope, has to be now.
"Kids, mind if we quit early today?"
"Yay!!"
The delivery guys were a miracle of efficiency. Old fridge, washer, & tv spirited off & new units fully installed & operational in under 20 minutes. Two office guys came over for the switchover too & I'm sure they were wondering why in hell I'm getting all these nice things for free. Good question.
TV picture & sound big & crisp. Now if only there were anything on .. |
