on the other hand you don't want to get too far off track lest you get your head cut off (no joke, Middle Egypt: Edfu to Luxor, is Jihad country), Luxor looks nice, but don't mess around there. If you find a good guide, keep him as far as possible and pay him well. The one decent part of Cairo is close to Nasser metro station, and Alexandria (West Alex) is a fairly cool city. But just a heads up, Egypt is nothing like other countries at a similar level of poverty, the Arabs are very agressive, and the Muslims in general will hate you.

Head cut off... Give me a break. Says the man who only stuck to tourist areas.

The one decent part is close to Nasser metro station? Did you not get to Zamleck? Doesn't sound like you saw much of Cairo.

Muslims in general will hate you? WTF?

What BB said.

Plus, parts of Mohandessin and even Garden City - not far from the prime position of the UK Embassy nd indeed the concrete bunker that is the US Embassy.

Even Heliopolis is worth a visit, if only to see the Baron's residence, maintained in splendid isolation on an entire block. This is very close to Hosni's house too. If I remember well, this is on the road to the Suez Canal at the point closest to Cairo - worth a visit of only to say "I saw it".

I briefly visisted Syria years ago - too many to mention and as I was driving from Kuwait to UK - and at that time they were still using steam locomotives. Stopping in Aleppo, my experience of the Syrian people was pretty much as BB described.

Morocco I have been to twice: once as a teenage tourist off a cruise ship to Tangier, but my memory is cloudy. Second time was en route by car from UK to Algeria. At that time, the border between Algeria and Morocco was closed except for foreigners. I had in the boot of my car 6 cases of English beer (anyone who has drunk Algerian beer will understand why) and this caused great interest to the Algerian customs officers who would not believe me when I said how good it was. So we all tried it there and then. They agreed.

Happy days, happy days.

BB, guessing from your avatar and posts, perhaps you have some special relation to the Arabs and Muslims, maybe you can speak Arabic too? Everyone is bound to have different experiences, but if I were Ajuma, I would forget Arab countries, go to Israel instead, where the people are decent, prices are higher but not too bad, and the weather and geography is not so different from the north of Egypt. And you'll be supporting the good-guys with your travel money, not the Intifada.

(PS, if you go, you're gonna see Mubarrak and the baron's house coming from the airport anyway, so don't bother putting that on your itinerary. Do go see where Jesus and the holy family hid out during "the flight into Egypt," it's right next to what is probably the only synagogue in the whole Arab Republic of Egypt, stop in there (it is of course empty) to show your support for freedom and tolerance.)

here are the problems I have with your posts:

1. You've only been to the most touristy Arab countries with the worst reputations (Morocco and Egypt)
2. On top of that, you stuck to the tourist routes.

It's like judging North America on Manhatten and Hollywood.

Good points...but you forgot Orlando, which is where most Latin Americans "judge" U.S. culture. Cool

Ajuma: the only Arab countries I'd avoid would be Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iran, and of course Iraq for the obvious reasons.

I'd not hesitate to go to Saudi, Egypt, Jordan, Syria, and several other countries in that region, perhaps even Lebannon, which might just be at the top of my list of places to see in the Mid East. (Money is the only reason I don't.)

Three of those aren't even Arab countries, but nevermind.

Ajumma,
I would recommend going to Egypt.

After Cairo/Giza and the pyramids, you must head to Sinai and the Red Sea coast to a town called Dahab. Unbelievable!!

Take a bus from Cairo to Sharm-el-Sheik and the cab drivers will pick you up. Great diving, snorlkelling, desert hikes/camel rides, herb and hotties from all over Europe (at least a few years ago .. not sure what it's like post-BUSH/911).

Watch your back in Egypt, though, lots of touts and such and weird attitudes towards females. Travel with a group/ never alone. Don't believe a word any of them say!

bon voyage

you can take a bus to Dahab from Cairo, no need to take a taxi from Sharm.

Check out the hotel barges that travel up the Nile river. The accomodations are reasonable, include most meals and you get a great view of life along the river. They also port in as they journey making for great day trips.

It ran about 500$ for 5-7 days

You have to go to the last minute travel travel deal for more info.

One word: Dubai.

Seoul-Dubai-Seoul on Emirates.
Currently 1.1 million won return.

Why didn't you reccomend North korea or Zimbabwe sovietman? The peoples paradise is far superior to a bastion of capitalist greed.
