For the richardwaving patriots who like to parrot The Right Dishonourable Jean Cretin in referencing the UN ranking Canada the best country in the world in which to live, last year Canada was #3.

This year Canada is #8.
Lower than *The United States of America.*
Will Alzeihmer's PM be saying daaaaaaaaaat?
He never say dat 'bout da GST!!!

Of course, there is an inherent contradiction ranking Canada among countries, but stand tall and proud-will you claim that Canada is number 8 because the UN said so?

Will all the true strong and free Canadian patriots still blindly follow The United Nations no matter what the cost?

Good job, Canada.

I got so disgusted with how poorly governed Canada is... the crumbling access to higher education... wasteful and hated programs such as the gun registry... our defining ourselves by spiting the Americans... that I left. I'm not sorry to see Canada drop to number eight, but only if it inspires us to do better.

On the other hand, I always wondered why people care what the UN says about country rankings. The criteria for ranking always seemed a little fuzzy and PC for me. Does it really make that much difference?

Considering that our social programs have been under attack by Federal and Provincial governments for over a decade, this news is not much of a surprise.

You may want to read a different website or article. Some still think Canada is the best country. I guess it works for advertising and business.
Confused

According to the Vancouver English Centre:

Canada, The World's Best Country To Live In

For the sixth year in a row, Canada ranks first among 175 countries in the United Nation's quality of life survey. The Human Development Index (HDI) examines the health, education and wealth of each nation's citizens.

According to the British Council:

CANADA: Useful Information and Links
Canada has 6 time zones and a population of approximately 31 million people. The United Nations has consistently ranked it as the Best Country in the World in which to live. A recent international poll listed Vancouver as joint top city in the world to live in (with Bern,Vienna, and Zurich).

-The UN stated the rating took into consideration Canada's horrendous record in dealing with it's indigenous populations. It's kind of hard to argue with the low rating considering Canada has one of the developed worlds largest internal 3rd world populations. Native peoples die regularly of such easily avoided sickness as, water born illnesses, and nutrition deficiencies; there are enourmously disproportionate numbers of homicide, suicide, sexual assault etc.
-Besides: Neoliberal, rightwing economic policies have ripped to shreads the once celebrated social infrastructure that kept Canada at the top for so long.

Thank god Canada's no longer at the top of that damned list. I got tired of telling people "No it's not." when they tell what a great place to live it is.

The GREAT WHITE NORTH FOREVER

I agree that we treated our native north americans like shit but no worse than the States. I read the article about the ranking and the difference between 1st and 10th isn't all that much. The U.N. report more importantly shows the gap between the Haves and Have nots.

Hey, we're no worse than the States!! Real great accomplishment there, Gomer. Where's our Nobel Peace Prize?
I've had lots of experience with the living conditions of natives in Canada. As is well known, they are among the poorest citizens. I would wager that, if you compared the standard-of-living of Canadian natives to that of American blacks, the blacks would come out on top, or at the very least it would be damned close. Canada's much-heralded "compassionate society" is pretty much a whites-only club.

I went to school with numerous Native and Inuit Canadians. They received free university, living allowances, subsidized housing and vehicles, tax-free status, optical care, medical care, and preferential treatment in summer and government jobs.

Where do I sign up to be oppressed and treated like beep?

I'm with Moldy on this one. Go out to some of the Squamish reserves North of Vancouver. Our poor First Nations People can be seen driving around in new SUVs and living on HUGE properties in monster houses. No property tax, no income tax, and free education. I come from a family much poorer than any "Indian" I went to college with. Yet I will be paying back a student loan for the next 15 years, at prime plus two. Who do you think is paying for the freebie-education? Ever wonder why your tuitions are so high?
