So I finally got around to installing a torrent client the other day. And I downloaded some dvd's that are labelled as just .bin files.

I downloaded the daemon emulator and it seemed to rip the dvd's fine, but now when I press play on the panel. All I get is the sound and the wmp klaedoscope thing. Why can't I get video on my downloads ?

PS: also, why are my torrent uploads around 3 times as fast as my downloads ?

You do not have the proper codec.

Visit vcdhelp.com

They have all the codecs you will need, be able to tell you what they are, and a program that will tell you if you are lacking the proper codec or not "gspot" be its name (and may I suggest, you do not do a google search for that when your students are around. yes I did it)

Got the .cue files to go with the .bins?

If not you can make them.

wrench, I had installed daemon tools already and that's the software I was using to play the bin files. I have the cue files downloaded with the file. I'll try vcdhelp tonight to try and figure out which codecs I'm missing. Nice one.

Try Klite codec pack. Plays everything and anything.

fyi i just googled "virtual drives" and came up with nothing negative. what should i be looking for exactly?

Google VLC media player, download (free) and install. It plays everything.

i've been using daemon and alcohol for quite some time and have never had any problems. Nor have i ever heard of someone having problems, more than "it doesn't work" or "i don't know how to use it".

i'm sure "jaz" appreciates you coming to his aid, but his post just sounded a little aloof, and didn't really add to the discussion. and you must be some kind of magician to tell if i was relaxed or not when i posted that. at least you gave a link. that's all i was saying to jazblanc. if it bugs you that i pointed that out then fine, but don't expect me to take you seriously when you make google jokes.

I had problems with daemon tools that because I had a raid scsi configuration in my system and when daemon installs it uses a scsi emulation hosed m system once.

BTW, to make a CUE sheet, this is how:

They are quite easy to make yourself. The first thing you need to do is download CDMAGE so that you can determine which type of BIN image file it is (mode 1 or mode 2). Take note of the mode and the corresponding that will probably be 2048 or something like that. With this information you can make your CUE sheet.

Now, open up a new file in Notepad which you can find in your accessories folder in the program menu. Copy and paste the following text into your new file:

FILE "your BIN file name.bin" BINARY
TRACK 01 MODE1/2352
INDEX 01 00:00:00

You need to change only two aspects of this coding, the filename in the first line and the mode/number in the second line. The filename has to be exactly the same as the BIN file that you are trying to extract. To get the exact filename, right click on the BIN file and select "properties". Copy the filename from there and just paste it into the top line of the CUE. Next, change the "MODE1/2352" part according to the CDMage settings. Finally, save the CUE file by selecting 'save as', and changing the section 'save as type' to 'all files'. Now, using the same filename (paste it again), but be sure to delete the .bin extention at the end, and replace it with a .cue extension.

You have just created a CUE sheet. Now, to use your BIN file, simply open your CUE sheet (not with VLC player... I know that for some stupid reason BINs and CUEs are automatically associated with this media player but it is just plain wrong), and make sure that it opens with your CD burning program like Nero Burning ROM, Easy CD Creator, etc.. The CUE sheet will instruct your burning software on how to deal with the BIN file. Select the option for 'CD at once' and proceed to make a disk from the file.

When it is finished burning the new disk from your BIN file, open your CD-Rom tray and push it back in. It should autoplay and install or play whatever files you just put there. In essence, you have just created an exact copy of an original install disk or CD-ROM.
