and the event has also been enhanced a bit in U.S. history texts for the sake of nation-building and patriotism, but this is hardly unique in the U.S. |
Most definitely Gopher. And I would not even begin to compare America's "enthusiasm" with it's textbooks to China, Japan, or Korea's rewritting. I was just trying to make a point of perspective. Canada wasn't technically a nation, but it was close enough.
Now on your other point, you are right. Canadians (I believe I can say this without being shot down) at the time were British citizens and would have fought in any war the British were fighting. If America had invaded Mexico and Britain had allied itself with America, Canadian troops would probably have also been sent. I am just saying it's really not unreasonable ot say Canadian troops burned down the Capitol. They did, as the British/Canada native nationals were involved. But to be honest , I don't get some sort of thrill that we burned things down. I would have rather Canadian troops acted like gentlemen during the war. |

In Marine Corps oral history, Marines are taught that the British left the Commandant of the Marine Corps's house standing and untouched out of respect for him and the Marine Corps.
Would be an interesting detail if this were indeed true. For one thing, it would show a shred of civility, at least.
All this is nothing compared to how the Chileans treated the Peruvians in the aftermath of the War of the Pacific. When the Chileans occupied Lima, they deliberately destroyed the national library and several other totally nonpolitical, nonmilitary targets just for the sake of humiliating the Peruvians, whom they've always considered racially inferior, by the way. And no matter how bitter U.S.-Canada relations get, at least we don't have racism between us...in any case, a little comparison is good for perspective, no? |

Although there's some historians who debate the claim, America generally didn't bomb the smurf out of Kyoto out of respect for its historical treasures.
But I think when a nation (ie the USA) makes an unprovoked attack on you in a wanton land grab (ie the War of 1812), you're quite justified in burning down the HQ of the commander 'n' chief. |

Also, if you're in the Kobe/Kansai area of Japan, you should check out Himeji castle. The city was in ruins (my friend's dad is a buddhist monk and "owns" (not really, no time to explain) a temple which got the crap kicked out of it my explosives) but Himeji Castle was completely untouched. A good thing too, Osaka castle sucks, it's smaller and it was rebuilt. Himeji Castle is the real thing and much nicer anyways |
