3. Sufjan Stevens - Illinois
4. Sleater Kinney - The Woods
5. The New Pornographers - Twin Cinema

Hmm, gotta check out those albums. Havent listened to any of them, but caught a few of the new Sleater Kinney and Sigur Ros tunes online. Nice.

My top 8 (unordered):

Arcade Fire - Funeral
Franz Ferdinand - You could have it so much better
White Stripes - Get behind me Satan
Kaiser Chiefs - Employment
The Magic Numbers - The Magic Numbers
Super Furry Animals - Love Kraft
Beck - Guero
Clap your Hands, Say Yea - Clap your Hands, Say Yea

And, though they're from 2004, Green Day [American Idiot] and The Killers [Hot Fuss] should be topping that list [hence the reason why it's only a top 8] as I've played them more than any of the above-listed throughout the year.

Nice... I've been totally out of the music loop for the last couple years now, but these were the only two albums that came to mind when I saw this thread title.

I was kicking myself when I found "Funeral", cuz at the time I realized Arcade Fire had played at a music festival (SummerSonic) that I had attended in Osaka just a week before. Apparently they're amazing live, so I was somewhat bitter about missing 'em.

Great disc, though.

"Based on a true story" by Fat Freddies Drop

A deep soulful fusion of roots reggae, jazz, soul, funk, and hip hop, with live horn section and a honey voiced singer...

I agree with Fat Freddies Drop, but i'm sure not many people outside of NZ and the underground reggae-jazz scene in Europe would have heard of them.

My 2cents in no particular order:

Foo Fighters - In Your Honour
Clap Your Hands and Say Yeah - Selftitled
The Mars Volta - Frances the Mute
Fat Freddies Drop - Based on a True Story
New Pornographers - Twin Cinema
Kanye West - Late Registration
Broken Social Scene - Selftitled
Beck - Guero
LCD Sound System - Selftitled
Sigur Ross - Takk
Sufjin Stevens - Illinoise (quite possibly my #1)
Supergrass - Road to Rouen
Wolf Parade - Apologies to The Queen Mary
Wilco - Kicking Television

peace

I follow NZ music, but I swear to god my feeling for Fat Freddies has nothing to do with being partisan. They just make the kind of music I really dig, and it's a rare kind. So for me, they seriously are the best band in the world right now. I'm not including non vocal electronica though like Kruder and Dorfmeister or Groove Armada...

I also get right into Black Seeds, Nesian Mystic, Che Fu, Rhombus, 50Hz, and a whole bunch of that pacific flavoured funky fusiony electronic groove stuff that is often featured on the Loop compilations. NZ music has really flourished and developed some seriously deep sophistication in the last ten years, on the funk side. The guitar rock doesn't quite do it for me at the moment.

Most of my faves have already been mentioned but I'd like to add another few.

The Go! Team - Thunder, Lightening, Strike (May be late 2004)
Bloc party - Silent Alarm
Death Cab For Cutie - Plans
Iron Wine & Calexico - In The Reins
Kaiser Chiefs - Employment
My Morning Jacket - Z
Ash - Meltdown

And the big disappointment of the year for me was Weezer's 'Make Believe'. It's like Weezer-by-numbers, recognizably Weezer but lacking the energy and creativity of their previous releases.

No particular order:

Elbow - Leaders of the Free World

Thievery Corporation - The Cosmic Game

New Pornograghers - Twin Cinema

The Engineers- The Engineers

The Go! Team - Thunder, Lightening, Strike (but yes it is in fact late 2004)

Pinback - Summer in Abaddon (also late 2004)

Beck, Guero (even though he is a Scientologist, it's a damned fine album)

My Morning Jacket - Z

Kate Bush - Ariel

White Stripes - Get Behind me Satan

Wilco -Kicking Television

Gomez - Out West

Ted Leo - Shake the Sheets (also end of 2004, but what the hell, I've already got 2 of those on here already)

(Sufjan Stevens would probably be on here but I haven't heard all of the album yet, ditto for Broken social scene)

My personal disappointments of 2005:
Sleater-Kinney
Arcade Fire
Wolf Parade
Andrew Bird
Spoon - Gimme Fiction
Paul McCartney's latest

Some of them were just not my cup of tea, and for others my expectations were too high.
Each album had some fantastic songs, but when I'm paying for the album... I dunno, as albums they left me wishing I hadn't bought them and had just downloaded (or bought off iTunes) the particular songs I liked.

I'm usually a year behind on albums cos I wait for the initial hype to die down checking stuff out. These ones were good from this year though :

Elbow
Super Furries
Antony & The Johnsons
The Magic Numbers - The Magic Numbers
Dangerdoom - The mouse and the mask
Arcade Fire
Chemical Brothers- Push the button
Sam Prekop- Who's your new professor?
Maximo Park- A certain trigger
Gravenhurst- Fires in distant buildings

Was disappointed with the Beck, Death Cab for Cutie and Boards of Canada ones though.

It was a pretty weak year for good music in my opinion, however, there were a few awesome albums.

My top three albums of 2005:

Queens of the Stone Age - Lullabies to Paralyze

- QOTA are one of my fav. groups and this album is great. Not their best work but still better than most of the garbage you hear on the radio.

Death from Above 1979 - You're a Woman, I'm a Machine

- This is like a heavy-ass dance, metal, punk record. Just two guys, drums and bass with some synth thrown into the mix. What a great album this is. I haven't heard a more bad ass bassline than the one on 'Little Girl' song 7.

Arcade Fire - Funeral

- A great album. Very dark and sad but still one I can listen to anytime. These guys know how to play. I saw them live this past summer and I was blown away. Great performers who know how to play their instruments.. and they certainly use a lot of them.

It's not often that Canadian artists end up being the bulk of my favourite music at a given time but this was an amazing year for Canadian music. It's nice to see some Canadian artists making it rather than the same lame ass Céline Dion or Nickelback crap.

Excellent choice, one of my fave bands for sure. Definitely one of the best releases of the year that I've heard.

Admittedly it was released in late 2004 but I didn't acquire it until 2005 The Tragically Hip- In Between Evolution was definitely a part of the soundtrack of my life this year. Great album!!
