I must remember not to post in a bad mood. I can have some serious black moods. Even I don't always agree with some of the things I have posted. I was angry and posted it in a fit of rage....then changed it when I didn't really want to say the message. I was shocked when you actually could save it..I really did change it in 10 seconds.  |

I have a simple question.
When an American and a Canadian meet in a Korean expat bar, which one is usually the first to throw the stone?
Which one looks at the person and sees the nation?
Which one looks at the person and sees the person?
Edit: I'm aware that there is usually a cultural explanation for individual opinions or actions, so the question of nationality isn't completely irrelevent. However, there is a difference between observing a person and trying to put their words/actions into some sort of cultural context, and assuming that someone is automatically going to conform to a cultural stereotype before one has had the chance to prove otherwise.

| i don't know if it's been said since this thread went it's predictable way....but to the OP: you wouldn't have even got a phone interview if the canadian in question 'hated' americans. |

Why? Most phone interviews are done at the request of the owner or director and not at the discretion of the teacher. That is why the teacher was doing the interview. The act of performing the interview in itself has no bearing on the teacher's like or dislike of Americans; it was just something she was told to do. |

I had spoken to the school's Director (Korean) previously and things went well. The Canadian is the head teacher at the school; I believe the only reason she even bothered to call is because her boss told her to, she was just going through the motions because she had a preconceived notion of who I am.
I'm not as offended much as I am surprised... I'm from the Puget Sound area in Washington State, a fuzzy zone of nationality where CBC and PBS television signals mix freely and 18 year-old American high school students regularly make the weekend trek to Vancouver for the legal consumption of mass quantities of alcohol�� anyway, I��m much more in line with majority Canada politically than I am with majority America (especially in November of 2004).
Maybe I got it wrong... maybe she just hates men.  |

One, you can read the mind of someone you talked to for 30 minutes, more, less? Please tell me how you got that power?
Two, head teachers are usually pretty busy and hate doing interviewing and giving the boss advice. You have no idea what the situation is there.
Three, and most importantly, ever done anymore than 4 interviews? It's annoying and tiresome. How do you know the interviewer wasn't...
1) Just having a bad day
2) You were the last interview and he/she was sick of asking the same questions
3) She had already found the perfect candidate in a previous interview(now this is still wrong, but it happens a lot in North America in almost every profession).
Four, while your resume looks sound and you seem like a good person, you might suck at interviews. I have seen people in interviews and I swear my dog could have done a better job (really, the dog can't speak and make a fool of himself ) |

Maybe she was having a bad day, cool, I accept that, but I'm not imagining things... her attitude, tone and questioning were all negitive and focused on my military service, not my desire to teach.

Former US soldiers with BA's done by distance during their time in the service have applied at my university over the years. They have never even been granted interviews. I don't think a degree from a school without an actual campus or a recognisable name is helping you.
You haven't even touched on your desire to teach.
If I joined the Marines (cough, hack, ahem) and all I wanted to talk about was teaching, I don't think I'd get very far.
I've been through several interviews for side jobs recently. Most of them were quite humiliating experiences. Interviewers have hidden agendaes and maybe even certain numbers of people they have to interview before making a decision even though they already know who they want. |
