This is from todays Chosun ilbo (online)newspaper:

Korea Sees Growth as Crime Tourism Destination

A sizeable proportion of foreign criminals in Korea come here for the sole purpose of breaking its laws, statistics suggest.
The Korean Institute of Criminology on Tuesday published a study of 251 criminal cases in 2004, which found that 15.5 percent of foreigners caught for prostitution, credit card fraud, small arms smuggling and other crimes in Korea had come to the country for no other purpose.

However, immigration offenses accounted for more than half or 54.2 percent of the crimes committed by foreigners here. Of those, 25.9 percent was naturalization fraud, 13.5 percent illegal entry into the country, 12.7 percent overstaying of visas and 12.4 percent illegal residency.

The number of foreign criminals in Korea increased more than five-fold since 1988, from 2,532 to 13,045 in 2004, while the overall number of foreigners only grew 2.6 times, from 2.17 million in 1998 to 5.75 million in 2004, meaning the number of criminals among them rose twice as fast.

The biggest group of convicted lawbreakers came from Iran, who made up 6,691 of every 100,000 foreign criminals, followed by 6,304 Russians, 5,672 Hong Kong citizens, 4,958 Americans and 3,190 Germans. Statistically the most law-abiding guests were the Nepalese, who made up only 211 convicted criminals per 100,000 wrongdoers from abroad, followed by 571 Indonesians, 807 Filipinos and 821 Thais.

Where are the Canadians....?????

"Crime tourism"? Jeez, dumbest thing I've ever heard. If foreigners come to Korea for no other purpose than to commit crime (which is in itself ridiculous) then maybe they should think about why. Maybe Korea isn't the hub of Asia after all...just another hub of crime...

I can't think of what crime tourism means in Korea, but taobenli is wrong. There is such a thing as crime tourism, and there are tons of poor children in Thailand who are at the wrong end of it.

We're probably number six, after the top five mentioned.

Dick Cheney and Georgee Bushee were here recently.

They're probably guilty of something.

Per 100,000? But there weren't this many criminal convictions, I'm sure. Why do they say per 100,000 instead of 1%, and which is sadder, that K-journalists would use this method to exaggerate or that they'd expect their readers to be stupid enough to fall for it?

Not thinking in the right way. Here, this may help.

who made up 6,691 of every 100,000 foreign criminals =
who made up 6,691 of every 100,000 foreigners

Atleast they didn't go with foreign devils this time. Getting better Wink

laogaiguk-

Erm...actually, I do research on child trafficking, so yes, I do know that kind of thing occurs, as well as all kinds of other horrible kinds of trafficking. I have heard the word "sex tourism" used, but "crime tourism"? It sounds strange, is too broad and encompasses too much. I actually thought the tone of the article was funny, but also frustrating (like many media reports in Korea). What an arrogant claim- that many foreigners came to Korea for no other purpose than to commit crimes. If a journalist in the U.S. wrote that Koreans come to LA to commit crimes (or included Koreans in the statistics) there would be a public outcry. But then, we know that already...

I read something about Koreans getting a 3 month tourist visa to the states some time in the near future. Doesn't sound like they're planning on returning the favour to the Americans

Oh ya, like I said, I have no idea what crime tourism would actually mean for Korea. And I wasn't arguing about language either, it is almost always refered to as sex tourism (for what I said), but that is an example (a sub of what I think they meant by crime tourism Wink ) Someone going to Australia hoping to bring back a bit of coral would be consided a crime tourist I guess.
The Koreans might be talking about people who come here on a tourist visa to work. They came here as tourists for the specific reason to break the law, ie work.
It would be nice if they weren't so vague though.

Last time I checked, foreigners were 3 times less likely to commit crimes in Korea than Koreans.

Amazing they do not edit out George Bush. That is getting to be worst than saying the F word in church anymore.
