Can anyone explain this? are we exempt are not if our contracts are dated before Jan.1st. 2006. This is from the NHIC.

From 1, 2006, the National Health Insurance will be compulsory for all foreign workers in Korea

☞ Due to the amendment of the National Health Insurance Act on Jul. 13, 2005, all foreign workers and overseas Koreans who work for an workplace in Korea shall automatically be the employee insured since 1 January, 2006.

If foreign workers made or will make their employment contract with their employer before 1 January, 2006, they will be the employee insured from 1 January, 2006, and if they will make the employment contract with their employer since 2 January, 2006, they will be the employee insured since the first date of employment.

☞ But, the condition for those who are excluded from the employee insured and have the following residence status(F1 ~ F5, D1 ~ D9, E1 ~ E5, E7 ~ ECool is not changed. That is to say, they can be the self-employed insured under the National health Insurance voluntarily. However, those who have the residence status E6 are excluded from this groups.

☞ For more information including insurance benefits, and contribution, etc, please see the attached or refer to our website(www.nhic.or.kr).

When I first started working here my school signed me up for the insurance. They never paid their half of the bargin and I never paid mine nor got my book.

Two years later the rat bastards (insurance people) were looking for me. Now remember, I never signed up for the insurance, nor did I ever sign any paper for them AND remember, Hagwons sign a nice little paper saying they are going to be responsible for you (pay your debts, if you get in trouble with the law they can get in trouble as well).

So I had my current school (at that time) call them up and explain things to them (never got the book, never saw a bill etc). They would hear none of it. I asked them if I bought a car in their name, would they be required to pay for the yearly registration fee? No answer of course.

Eventually they gave up. But now that age is catching up with me, I would like to get some insurance but don't want to deal with it. BUT it's nice that this new little law went into effect so they cannot claim that I was required to have it way back when.

Me too. I never got proper insurance and eventually they tracked me down and asked for money. I currently don't have insurance either. It would be nice to have it.

I told my boss two weeks ago, "though you haven't enrolled me for medical insurance, if, for some insane reason, I decide to get medical insurance in the future, I will have to back pay all the months I have not been insured. Thus you must give me half the money to cover the bill I recieve when I apply. Just shy of 500,000 I figure."

He did sommersaults and pleaded, "But, nooooo... We can tell them your pay was LOWER!"

"Okay. 400,000? How much you wanna tell 'em I was working for? Cheon won an hour?"

They told my employer it was necessary to be insured since 2005. I always have had insurance, but one of my co-workers didn't want it and was forced to have it.

These guys are crazy when they want their money. Seriously.

Nope...the a$$ who signed you up was the same a$$ who signed me up before. Remember she did it to all of us at the same time. I haven't seen her in a long long long time.
