I'm moving to South Korea in the next few months to teach English and I'm curious about music in the clubs there. From what I've read there is an abundance of bars everywhere in Korea and just about any type of club, etc in Seoul specifically. What I'm wondering is are there electronic music venues in the smaller major cities that bring in djs regularly? My main interests are underground hip hop, trip hop, breaks, reggae, and psy trance. What are the chances of me enjoying these types of shows in SK generally? |

Good luck. The korean music scene mostly seems to be a sad copy of whatever is in America. YO YO YO BABY! |

Outside Seoul, your chances of finding these types of shows is very slim indeed.
If you like the Coyote Ugly soundtrack, then you can hear it in bars all over Korea, and Asia for that matter. |

I thought there was a decent breaks scene in Pusan though? |

There's no reggae but there's a decent traditional ska band called Kingston Rudy Ska that plays pretty often. |

I went to a club in Naksan (East side of Korea) one time where the girls were basically line dancing to hip hop and refusing to meet any guys.
Seoul's alright though, but a bit pricey. I imagine you could find a number of Korean guys with dreadlocks who wouldn't be able to tell you what a rastafarian is. |

In Seoul you're good to go with hip hop, and very mainstream trance, but not real psy, unless a touring DJ is comming thru which does happen a few times a year. The other stuff you mentioned people don't have a clue about that here yet. |

I once saw a Korean Oasis tribute band. They were just like the real thing- swearing, moaning, spitting and forgetting the words- a lovely day out for all the family |
