Good explanation Demonicat! Why didn't I think of that? It seems so obvious now.
That's the funny thing about your native language. We learned a lot of these rules not by studying, but by listening. Therefore we often can't explain why we know them. We just do.
I think that's why Korean students often know English grammar rules better than the teachers. I wonder how well they'd be able to explain Korean grammar? |

No, I didn't, but I was limited in my poll options. Humanities was the last one to go before I hit the limit though  I had to group it under Arts. |

Big Mac when did you graduate? You are the 3rd person from Carleton on this board I know of. (Me and The Man also known as the Man and now you!)
It is sad that the grammar police are always jumping on people, but one should remember: if I was writing a piece for school I would pay attention to it. When writing something on Dave's most people are lazy and just spew it out quickly.
Saying English degrees are useless made me laugh. For most things I would agree. For getting a job in Korea, they are absolutely fabulous. |

I graduated from Carleton in 2001. At the school I taught at, there were three of us who graduated from Carleton. I've also met quite a few Carleton grads in Korea. It looks like we're popular! I'm not sure why.
I'm not usually one to jump on people for their grammar or spelling, but lately it's been bugging me. Sorry. I realize people are lazy on here, but I do have to wonder whether some of this laziness makes its way into the classroom. |

Other: MA Old English, BA English & History.
I watched a Simpsons cartoon last night where Bart clips a ponytail off a grad student and says, "ya-ya, I'm a grad student, I made $600 last year." Marge scolds him, "grad students aren't bad people, they just made a terrible life choice!" Sigh. Maybe she's right.
But without being mean about it, I notice it is usually people who did poorly in English in college who mock the subject, just as the people who spout the cliche about History being 'subjectively written by the victors' didn't take any. And why are people who think that academic English is a worthless pursuit, uh, teaching English?
