Do you think of Seoul as being "bright, vibrant, and cosmopolitan"?
Yes, and I'm even from a big city myself

Yes, but I'm from a tiny little town and find any place with more than a bowling alley to be vibrant.

I would guess, maybe outside China, Seoul has to be one of the least international and one of the least interesting cities in the world. It offers very little really but mostly the same stuff everywhere, a million Koreans and almost no variety. Or maybe China, big city, is more interesting?

Seoul is overrated and overrates itself. The people are not as friendly as some smaller places, I guess normal, that is that big cities are colder than smaller towns. But Seoul offers little. Where in Korea offers much? I don't know.

of course there are cooler cities than Seoul but to look at Seoul by itself - it is indeed bright and vibrant. cosmopolitan? perhaps only where the super rich hang and thats about it

i miss Seoul and the bright lights (and im in NYC), the 24 hour shopping in dongdaemun, even cafes in nyc dont open all night and in korea, they do

and the 24 hour food delivery rocks in korea

certainly a unique city

i agree with you, captain obvious.

i would say seoul is definitely bright, but only at night.

vibrant: no

cosmopolitan is laughable. a homogenous, inward thinking hyper nationalistic culture, cosmopolitan?? a country where it's cool to follow, cosmopolitan??
also, there is no decurum or sophistication in this city...nothing in terms of worldly good food, music or culture...a couple of cutie kangnam teens that are shopping at chanel, driving mercedes, and munching on fondue cannot make up for the millions of loud, abrasive, backwards thinking 'elders' pushing their ways through the subway, burping, farting, and stinking of third grade meat and turpentine, while they openly stare at the blonde woman accross from them like a bunch of baboons.

also, cosmopoltian cultures are not composed of a population whose shoes are all made of plastic.

If so, what is your vibrant city?

cities that ive been to that I find vibrant or at leas more vibrant/dynamic than korea...

miami, singapore, phoenix, new york, tokyo, and istanbul. Of course all these cities have their boring points too, but I would say they beat Seoul, at least in my subjective view.

Seoul is convenient and i have no complaints about the city itself, it makes due for noe....but like jajadude hit it on the head..... It is overated and overrates itself (nicely put, man!)

I fail to see how Sar-ool can be considered overrated, folks. Who overrates it? Paris - now that's an overrated city, dog *beep* all over the streets. Koreans don't like Seoul in my experience - they think it's dirty and has no character or beauty. And non-Koreans certainly don't rate or overrate Seoul because it has relatively little tourism. I cannot recall hearing any propaganda attempting to big-up Seoul. I think it's underrated in this regard - it's a pretty cool place that nobody knows about or considers visiting.

Because Seoul has such high density mixed with 24 hour lifestyle there's full of enerygy and 'life' everywhere at all times. That's pretty vibrant. I didn't get this feeling in most big cities in U.S. minus NY.

To say Phoenix is more vibrant than Seoul is reaching quite a bit I think. Phoenix area is nice place to relax and golf but not even close to seoul in brightness, energy, life, vibrant, ...whatever we're talking about in this topic.

You weren't here during the DYNAMIC KOREA! campaign, basically a big ol' BJ commercial showing Koreans how beautiful and DYNAMIC! their country was. Basically like the Malaysia truly Asia commercials...only they were shown in Korea...i don't get that. It its meant as a tourist ad, then why feature it at home?

Anyway, Koreans that Ive taught always tend to say "Dynamic/beautiful" when they describe their country/city. And they always ask me if I think Seoul is one of the most beautiful cities in Asia. I agree with you Spinoza, Seoul is cool...and Paris is OVERRATED...but I don't think it's a cosmopolitan city...they try hard to be in Daechi...but it's kind of like lipstick on a pig.

Ugh, almost a neutral post, but I failed at then end.

A Korean thought

Dynamic(Vibrant) : yes
Beautiful : Hangang and the Mountains yes, the city no
Cosmopolitan : Hell no. By the way, as a former student of urban design it would be sad if entire Seoul becomes cosmopolitan like Kangnam.
