Racetraitor said and either was lying or making something up to prove his point...or has no idea about the difference between a mistake at the level of knowledge and a miscue where the minds fumbles a bit..

English degrees aren't worth crap. I took a senior-level creative writing course that had English honours majors, and they didn't even know the difference between "your" and "you're." |
There isn't a native speaker of English anywhere (may not be true for young learners but certainly true of anyone who has entered university)that doesn't 'know' the difference between these two words. No one is going to get this wrong if it is discreet question on a test. That doesn't mean that people's cylinders don't misfired when they are writing and they replace one for the other.
That having been said...
I have a BA in English Lit...(big surprise as I took the time to defend my degree...)
and a B'Ed, M'Ed and a Journalism Dip...and I always misfire on 'there' and 'their' and I know my tendencies and still seem to make the mistake more often than not. |

That means your university was crap, not that English degrees are. At my school, we had to take a course in English grammar if we wanted to even minor in the subject. |
Was that MUN? A good Uni? I don't think so. But damm that grammar course was tough. Barely passed. Did Ok in Lit courses after 2 years of crappy marks trying to figure out what those know-it-all profs wanted. And most of them had big egos, but a few were cool. Most were like, I'm cool, I read so much and know so much more than you kids. What a bunch of jerks a lot of those fools were. Though I guess they still have better jobs than us in Korea.
Aren't degrees overrated? If you can read and write sufficiently, and speak properly, I'm not sure what purpose they serve, except in certain areas. Most arts degrees, anyway, seem like a big waste. Just an opinion. |
Why do I hear this argument all the time from Newfoundlanders? They all seem to say the same thing. What do you need a degree for? University is designed to teach you how to think and analyze. That's why it's valuable.
Maybe if they didn't have this attitude against education there would be more creative thinking in that province.

Don't slap that label on me. I went to MUN, and had a very different experience within the lit program than Jajdude did.
My personal take on the English degree is that it's like a bowl of rice- by itself, not awe inspiring. Add life experience or some practical skills to it though, and you've got something substantial. |

I started university at age 37. I was a single dad with 2 young kids & a dead-end blue collar job. Basically I was looking for new stimulation & chose my courses purely on the basis of personal interests. Never really had a plan.
Emerged 5 years later with a BFA double major in Creative Writing & Honors English & an MA in English Lit.
It was a good ride. Thanks UVic! |

I know two people with dyslexia.
One, he got a BA a long time ago only to become my country's most influential PR consultant. He couldn't spell. And he couldn't write very well at all. Like having a block alike to when we very first had to use a computer but had to make a powerpoint demo before doing anything else. We had to crunch through it for hours, right? Well, he just couldn't work his way around letters and sentences. It wasn't because he was dim.
The other one was a girlfriend who was brilliant with old British lit. Had a perfect, lovely, natural voice to listen to; Not a pretender when it came to orating about authors and the significance of their stories. Themes and such just naturally rolled through her. But, she couldn't write worth a damn. She needed a writer to follow her dictation for exams and for her essays. When I saw her own printing once I thought a child had written it.
But, she scored A's in the end.
However, I don't believe everyone on this board who doesn't know the difference between there and their has dyslexia. I think it is from a lack of desire to learn exact method. Like looking for shortcuts. Or from too much booze at Alpha Beta Gamma Delta parties. |

BS Management of Technical Operations from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University.
I'm planning to start an MA in International Relations either in the US or online. Does anybody here know of a good program? |

BA- major -Anthropology from the University of Otago.
One of my lecturers was talking about what job opportunities are out there for Anth grads and she said that basically all there is for us to do is head to Asia and teach english.....how sad....nevermind though, I had planned on doing that for some time. |

Mine's in sociology and the only reason I did it initially was to avoid the five to ten year plans that many had in going to the state school I attended. But hey, it was an interesting major though most of the courses were not taught all that interestingly.
That said, I finished university two months ahead of my 22nd birthday and well, I'm glad I got it out of the way. Plus, since I attended a state school, I was nowhere near as in debt as others who had attended private colleges were. |
