I see some posts about whether people like Korea or don't like Korea.

I see that as unmaterial.
My question is; What helps you get through the days while you're here?
Alcohol is some people's escape while some have PC games and even some have Dave's.
But what helps you get through the day?

curiosity is killing the cat......

Reading and just a pure thought of going backhome and having some money for school is a great inspiration.

Oh and sticking it to the Korean teachers when they pissme off.

Making $ for a nice 2 week vacation to the islands and being able to contribute to savings is what's getting me through this experiment.

The people - the fact that my boss, the teachers, and my Korean friends are really nice, supportive people who have bent over backwards to help me.

The money - Im saving a lot of money in a job that doesnt feel like 'work' at all.

The satisfaction of acheivment - the fact that I moved to Korea is a big deal for me. KOREA of all places! And the fact that Im here on my own, Im doing just fine, and I'm enjoying it.

Perspective - every single day is one day further from where I used to be, and one day closer to where Im going.

I spend a lot of time trying to figure out what everyone around me is doing.

While I enjoy teaching, I also like the point where work is done for the day and I have free time. That's what I worked for, free time. When I've finnished teaching for the day I've paid for that free time. Doesn't really matter what I do with it. I do love the end of the working day...

Love of life?

I don't know.

Since my radical transformation back in 2002, every day has been good, barring some typical exceptions. Life is great because I'm alive and I'm not being tortured or starved.

When I'm teaching, I'm with kids and having fun and laughing and playing. When I'm alone, I'm learning, or playing, or doing whatever. When I clean the apartment or do laundry, I'm living and breathing and experiencing this life I have.

Thich Nhat Hanh recommends living each moment as if it counts. Be with your breath, and don't do something just to get it over with. Do something because it's life and life is an amazing gift!

I don't get through the day. I live the day.

*yes, this sounds pious and cliche. my apologies.

The_beaver, homer, and qinella said it well. I enjoy many of those things.

And I really like Korean university students. I'm almost finished with a month-long camp teaching them and I find them to be some of the kindest, most sincere people I've ever met.

I regret to say, however, that they (I've been teaching almost all boys) have suffered some serious physical abuse at the hands of teachers over the years. One day I asked them all to tell us the last time they were hit by a teacher and what was it like. It was more gruesome and disturbing than I had imagined.

my second year in korea, i had so much free time i didn't know what to do with myself (i was teaching 12 hours a week at the university). i didn't use the free time as productively as i should have, but i made it through it without going crazy.

1. pc bangs
2. writing
3. a few drinks in the evening
4. girlfriend
5. reading
6. spa (great for those 4-hour breaks between classes and healthier than a smoky pc bang)
7. class prep
8. travel planning
9. good friends
10. exploring seoul
11. private lessons
