Just looking to start of a general discussion about the happenings in the NHL this year. And since no one at my hagwon this year is into hockey, I'm calling on all the fans on Dave's
Who has suprised you? What teams are doing better than you thought? Have you seen any games, what do you think of the new rules.
For me...
- the biggest suprise is the Buffalo Sabres. I had them pegged for the basement.
- Not suprised with Tampa, I was never really convinced that they were a "Stanley Cup" calibre team.
- I'm surprised Jammy Jagr is doing so well. Yes, he's good, but I thought he gave up a long time ago.
- Mildly suprised by Hasek. I keep wanting him to fail. I could somewhat support the Sens if it wasn't for him, but he just bugs me too much. He might finally be the piece that the Sens need to get past the Leafs.
- I'm suprised Detroit still manages to win.
- I'm mighty pissed that I didn't follow my gut and pick Gagne for my pool!
- I have only seen the first 10 Leaf games of the year and they were pretty entertaining. Nice to see the pace back up. Would like to see the linesmen do more waving off of unintentional icings.
- don't mind the shootout, so long as it never enters the playoffs.
- for the Leaf fans--- it's time for us to cut loose Sundin. Allison is the freakin man! He should be our number one guy. I like Sundin and he has been fine, but never able to take us to the next level. Time to try a new strategy. Allison and Lindros as 1, 2. Surely Sundin could be traded for a top notch defenceman. |

I agree with most of what you said, except for the following

Detroit not only had money to spend, but they've been one of the best drafting teams over the past 20 years. Fact. And very one-sided deals to get players like Draper, Lang and Shanahan didn't hurt either.

that is madness talking.. wanting to go a different direction without Sundin is one thing, but depending on Allison and Lindros? ha!
I'm a fan of the new rules, I came to HATE neutral-zone trap hockey.. you might as well have watched an oldtimers game since the action was so slow.. and yes, I blame the New Jersey Devils 100% for making that trap sexy for over a decade... okay.. Devils 85%, Expansion 15%. |

1- Who has suprised you?
Buffalo Sabres and Carolina Hurricanes.
My god...who saw that one coming???
Jarg...seems he has a heart afterall.
2- What teams are doing better than you thought?
Buffalo Sabres and Carolina Hurricanes and NY Rangers
3- Have you seen any games, what do you think of the new rules.
Love the new rules. Cleaned up the game and let skill out instead of trap and clutch.
I would ad that the new crop of rookies is fantastic (Stall, Crosby, Ovechkin, Phaneuf, Stavos) and that we are truly seeing which goalies are top notch and which goalies were only awesome due to equipment and clutch/grab hockey.
I like smaller market teams are in the mix and that is good.
4- Dissapointment (team or player or both)
Penguins!
My lord they seemed poised for improvement.
Bruins.
Strong on paper...weak on the ice and what a dumbo trade (Thornton).
Khalibulin: either he was over rated or he lost interest because Chicago aint that good. |

Yeah, but they're getting so old! That's why I was surprised. I definitely thought Shanahan was done, but look what he's doing.

Allison looks pretty sweet to me.

Indeed! Jersey was brutal. Funnily enough, they were the only team I could ever get tickets to see in Toronto. I wonder why that was... |

Some good points....
Penguins should be doing much better ... Recchi, Leclair, Ziggy! And nothing.
Rookies look good... Have you seen Thomas Steen play? Not bad at all.
I was quite happy for the Oilers and Flames during the off season. Hopefully theyll have some playoff success.
I'm a bit disappointed the salary cap might be going up already (even though I'm a Leaf fan) It's just going to lead the us to the same problems as before. |

Yeah I saw Steen play a couple of times. He will be a very good 2nd or 3rd line player in the future. He is just being overshadowed by Crosby, Staal, Dion Phaneuf and Ovechkin...not to mention other young stars like Nash. |

The Habs fired Claude Julien as head coach. Guess they needed a scapegoat. |

Actually Alias it was to be expected.
Gainey came in over 2 years ago and Julien was not his hire as coach. He was a stay-over from the previous administration. He decided to give the guy a shot and he basically blew it this year when the team tanked.
Now, the managing team is a winners team with Gainey, Carboneau and Jarvis. All ex-habs, all multi-cup winners.
This might be a good move for the Habs... |

Regardless of this move I'm just not expecting the team to make the playoffs this year. An unhealthy Theodore has been their main problem.
(rumor mill has Theodore going to Colorado for Abeischer and another player) |

Flyers, Flyers, Flyers, ok probably Ottawa, maybe Calgary.
Luongo just turned down a 30 million dollar contract. Says he want the Panthers to be a contender. He is a restricted free agent so Florida can match any offer he gets. If they trade him, he can really only be traded up. Not many teams are worse than Florida this year. Could the Habs use the best goalie in the league right now? |

Alias,
I think the Habs can make the playoffs. They are not that far off a playoff spot (1 point!) and with Gainey behind the bench they have a shot.
Also a trade is not ruled out...
I just hope all the Canadian teams make the playoffs as that would be cool. |

The Leafs could always use a proven goalie.... Belfour turning 41, Tellqvist decent, but not stellar, and the other 2 are too young yet.
There we go... We can work on my "trade Sundin" desires ... Sundin, Poggee, and a few other kids for Luongo? Any takers? |

Florida would not be that dumb.
Possible Luongo landing sites: Vancouver (they can offer up Bertuzzi), Colorado (they can offer up Tanguay or Hejduk and Arbeicher), Edmonton (highly unlikely).
Toronto can offer nothing of real value to Florida. They won't trade Sundin (he is not worth all that much now anyway) and Pogue has proven nothing and what "kids" beside Steen does TO have that are worth anything? |

I think what Montreal has done is just what that team needed.. great move...
I can see Luongo getting traded to the Habs for Theodore and someone/some pick else..
Guy will only help the team... |

Hmmm, yes.
I guess my tone of "I'm saying this and I know there is no way of it coming true" doesn't really come across in type-script.
Good move for the Habs. I love to see them in the playoffs.
It's still early, but any predictions for the playoffs? I can't believe I'm gonna say this, but I could actually see the Sens making it out of the East. Hasek is just too good for the Leafs to upset. (assuming the Leafs hold on to their playoff spot and meet up with the Sens at some point)
West... sadly I don't pay enough attention to the West. Perhaps the Flames again? |
