I've been teaching for 13 months now. 2 months ago one of my students told me : "F..k you." I was gobsmacked. Is this Korea???
I cancelled the class and told the director. The school told me that "Kids in Korea don't know what that means." I said that she most certainly DID know exactly what she was saying.

The school made the 2 girls apologise to me later. I stupidly kept teaching them but their attitude only went from bad to worse. After 3 more classes of disruptive and disrespectful behavior I refused to teach the class. I wrote to the parents expaining why. I don't know if the school ever told the parents why they no longer have a 'foreign teacher.'

Anyway, I WON'T be teaching that class again. Even though the school has tried twice to re-start me teaching it. I discussed this with my korean adult students - Guess what they said I should have done???

Pretend you didn't hear it, becuase you're just the stupid foreign language monkey.

Well done on taking the course you did. There's no need to tolerate that whatsoever and you only get the respect that you demand.

At the beginning of every year I go through "the drill". I tell the students what is acceptable and what isn't acceptable.

On the board I write in very large letter F*ck and Sh*t...they all know these 2 words. I explain that to me and some other people these are terrible words. I don't ever tolerate them in my class. I tell them DON'T SAY IT AND DON'T WRITE IT! I don't want to see or hear these words in my classroom EVER. I make it very very clear.

There was a point where they were writing this on their English books or writing f-ing USA stuff like that. I am one of those teachers who walks around a classroom. I would peer down and see this and calmly look at the student and ask "Is this your book?" If the answer was yes I would rip the cover of the book and give it back to the student without it's cover. I would then photo copy and give it to their home room teacher.

My 1st year was a nightmare with swearing, second year at this school 10 or 15 books coverless. 3rd year maybe 3 and this year 1 book. So mostly they get the idea. But you have to be fair and explain it and have your co-teacher reiterate it so there is no misunderstanding.

I don't allow korean swearing either. It amazes me that some Korean teachers allow this kind of talk and in fact use it in the class room. But that is their classroom not mine. In mine you swear your life is going to suck for 45 minutes.

If they ever say it to me directly I make them sit in the teacher's room writing "it" for say 1000 times. Which means every moment of free time is spent kneeling on the cold floor in the teacher's room writing. I do this in the teachers room because their homeroom teacher is bound to see them and ask why. I tell them and he/she gives them additional beat down.

I love my students but they know the rules. My classroom, my rules no ifs, ands or buts. I must be doing something right cuz I just signed on for a 5th year at this school.
