Hey Everyone,

I tried doing a search for this, but I didn't come up with much. I'm new to Korea, and was just wondering what the Lunar New Year usually involves. I know it spans over a few days, and that I have Monday and Tuesday off for it, but I was wondering what is the normal way to celebrate it here? Is there a special food to eat, drink to drink, places to go or things to do? I live in Seoul, and someone told me that it will be practically deserted because everyone leaves the city. I find this hard to believe, but if it's true, will I have trouble finding a place to eat?

If anyone knows of anything fun going on during those few days, and would be willing to throw me a few ideas that'd be great!

Thanks in advance! Smile

yes, seoul will be deserted. some shops and restaurants will still be open though. don't worry, you won't starve. hmmm ... i like seoul when it gets empty during chusock and new year. it's a nice vacation from the crowds. i usually spent new years out of the country. as far as fun things to do in seoul -- spend it with friends. go out and have fun. or you could travel somewhere in korea as long as you avoid the peak travel periods when everyone is trying to leave -- which might be difficult because it's a short window. cheap flights (or available seats) might be impossible this late in the game, but you could check around.

I guess the special food is ddeok- sweetish rice cakes that may or not have something inside them (red bean paste, honey...) and be dusted with various colours on the outside.
