Apparently a couple of years ago, Sports Illustrated did a study on sports in an effort to determine the most physically/mentally taxing of the lot and apparently HOCKEY came out on top. I never saw the report nor do I know how they executed their study. An American buddy of mine told me about it when a bunch of us were debating the topic

So it is just hearsay, but I do somewhat believe it cuz the guy that told me it was no fan of hockey whatsoever...

Has anyone ever heard of this report? I'd like to know more about it. What did you make of it. Surprised that hockey came out on top?

What do you think would be up on the list?

hockey, rugby, boxing...

probably not baseball ...

Cycling. The Tour de France is the most physically/mentally demanding sporting event in the world.

I'm pretty sure the Sports Illustrated survey said boxing- we had a whole debate it on here last year some time.
The general outcome was that only Football and Cricket were actual 'sports', everything else was just a game.

Yeah, I guess football is a real sport. But what about soccer? Wink

If you claim cricket, then we get baseball. (at least ours doesn't drag on for days). I do actually find cricket quite entertaining. Not quite the same intellectual challenges of baseball, but not bad.

I'm assuming "hockey isn't a sport" cuz not enough countries play it? Am I right? I tend to think only a few countires play it cuz it is too challenging -- its core skill is skating. What do other sports ask for? Running? Oooh, that is difficult -- Then of course, there is the cold climate factor.

Sailing isn't a sport... it's a mode of transportation.

Fact or opinion?

I definitely see the physical challenge ... but, where's the mental? Aside from "pace myself" and "gotta help the team leader and keep these other guys back"

Boxing.

The study was done by ESPN page 2, and boxing came out on top, hockey was number 2.

ps. Cycling. Above volleyball but below figure skating Laughing

I remember hearing that Soccer is the most physically demanding sport basketball very close behind...

I would think NHB and UFC, K1 would be the most challanging.

Do they allow defense in the Tour? Well, that changes everything. That I'd pay to see. You'd have guys ramming each other (NO! Not like that!). Then everyone would be scrambling to get up and chase down the dear leader to push his bike into the crowds or down the hill. And, of course it's Europe, so the crowds would be involved attacking the cyclists.

Physical? Yes!! And, more mentally taxing also. Viewership would go waaaay up.

Anyone else hate those annoying types of patriots who somehow tie their national sport to their own sense of self-worth?
"I heard Hockey is the toughest sport and Canadians excel in hockey, therefore Canadians are tough".
It doesn't take a Freud or a Jung (or a Kinsey) to figure it out.
And then they wonder why people bash their country on this board. Rolling Eyes

It seems "physically taxing" can be defined in any number of ways. I'd say that football (American) is much more "physically taxing" than hockey if we were to use (game-inflicted, as opposed to glove-dropping or bench clearing brawl types of) injuries as a benchmark.
If football teams attempted to play as many games in a season as hockey, the NFL would collapse due to the fact that the majority of players would be sidelined with crippling injuries.

The Tour de France is the most physically taxing famous event.

I would bet that the most challenging is the 100-mile marathon through Death Valley. And no, I am not making that up.

This all depends on so much!!!!!

I just did a 48 hour run, nonstop. Is that taxing? 389km. ......

It is very hard to continue and to do this at a "high" level. If you just want to do 200k , pretty well anyone can do it, walk it.

My vote goes for wrestling. Greco Roman. It is bloody well exhausting, those guys are trained to death and can meet any cardio demands.

Also a close second is rowing. Nothing comes near an exhausting 2000m all out row. Everything hurts and just to continue is a herculian feat.

Cycling, tour de france????? it may be hard, especially in the mountains BUT it aint hard. Cycling is a sissy sport (I've cycled many centuries, full days. ). Your ass may hurt but you have no physical pounding and stress....it shouldn't be up there in the rankings. Multiday running is much more demanding, say a race like the Spartathalon in Greece, or the trans Sahara (3000k constant running).

My own views. Triathalon.....another sport that gets too much attention for being "hard". No wonder so many doctors and chiropractors do it -- we all know they are so tough Smile

See, that's just ignorance. There hasn't been a bench clearing brawl in hockey in GOD knows how long.

You obviously have no clue. Don't post about things you don't understand.

How many fat guys are there in the NHL? 0. NFL= too many to count
