In the NHL ... I am way too lazy to look it up. But as an avid watcher/reader of the goings on in the league, I feel quite comfrotable saying there has been less than 5 in the last 15 years. It is something that the league introduced stiiff penalties/fines for in the late 80's, early 90's. As for other semi-pro bush-leagues, yes, they have been known to have some crazy-arse brawls.

You're ignorant about hockey. Don't mean to label you as being all around ignorant.

And, as a Canadian, yes, it is a matter of pride that hockey is number 2. Does it make me think we're tougher than anyone esle. No. But it is something I like to share, cuz as a little known sport, I'm sure it is surprising to most people that it is ranked so highly. Just trying to spread the word and garnish the sport some respect.

On a different note, hockey is the only sport I know of, that people (who are in superb shape) can only perform at their best for about a minute at a time before needing a break. There is NO standing around.

One thing working against other sports is that although they may be as physically demanding, you get a lot of breaks to stop and catch your breath during the gameplay. The only other sport that I can think of that players seem to really be moving constantly is basketball, but even then to a lesser degree. (And yes of course, running, cycling....etc. but nobody is hitting you and you aren't changing directions or going your hardest the whole time)

Even with basketball there seems to be a fair bit of standing around with one hand in the air waiting to see whether the other guy is going to shoot or pass.

I'm sure there's some kind of scientific aerobic vs anaerobic type explanation as to why some sports are long and constant (cycling, long distance running) and some are short spurts of action followed by standing around or going off for a break (American Football, hockey, sex).

Ideally what you'd look for in a sport is for the short bursts of action to move from one area of the field to another, so that if one team is attacking, their defenders get a rest, but the crowd always have something going on.

Motocross riders, next to soccer athletes and cyclists?

This is a little surprising, but I remember reading on the next, that next to soccer and cycling, motocross athletes were in the some of the best overall physical conditioning among pro athletes.

Wasn' there a study done on this a few years ago, where they compared all top athletes and soccer guys were the fittest and then cyclists

Speed, toughness, agility, the ability to play both offence and defence, teamwork, individualism, quickness, hand eye coordination, strength, endurance - all around hockey far outdoes any other sport. Plus throw in the ability to skate.

First, I would like to point out that I'm an idiot for saying "Imaad Rocket Rishaad" when "Imad Rishaad" is the basketball announcer. The football player was something like "Raghib Ishmael"...

Anyway,

Todd Bertuzzi. Bad timing,unfortunate landing. Too bad for Moore, but it wasn't as bad as the results indicate. Anyone who thinks otherwise ... not too understanding of the sport. There's been a lot worse. Bertuzzi is a victim of bad luck. Anyone who really knows the sport would agree. And by "know" I mean people who have played and watch. Not some all-holy writers that were always picked last in gym class and spend all their time studying stats but don't really understand the game.

Is my "self worth tied to a sport"? Interesting. I'll have to remeber that.

Yes, my patriotism is tied to a sport. Greatest Canadian Moments = I'll give it to Vimy Ridge, but followed by the '72 series. Greatest
Canadian = Terry Fox or Wayne Gretzky. First class guys that brought/bring more pride to our country than anyone else.

Proudest, "Yes, I am Canadian" moments of my life. Blue Jays' World Series wins, Donovan Bailey winning the 100 metres back in ... '96? Any great Olympic moment.

Similar to 'go for it' or 'go to town', 'no one is stopping you', etc.
