Surprise! We're having a vacation for lunar new year... the friday before through the tuesday after. This was decided/announced by the boss today. What do you think it means? Five days for the owners to legally change their names, burn their unpaid bills, pack their belongings into the car, and defect to the North or someplace? Or could it be that they never thought before today that the parents of our students might be planning to take their kids somewhere on those days? How should I interpret this development? |

Wow, youre sceptical!!
I would be happy for the vacation! We never get told when we have extra days until 2 weeks before....
Why dont you ask one of the teachers why you are getting a long holiday? |

I wouldn't sweat it too much bro...the Lunar New Year is kinda the hotness here. If you ask the kids, they don't get presents on Christmas but they sure get money and food from their relatives on the New Year. The families need days off to take the long trek from one part of Korea to another. Might not sound like much but they have to sit in traffic for hours. The usual 2 hour car ride during the holidays can take around 8 to 9 hours. I would teach them how to say "are we there yet?" in English and see if its as annoying for Korean parents.
However, I would take pictures of the school as it is and make photocopies of your records...you know, in case sh*t happens... |

It just means they didn't really think about the holiday until just now. |

Yeah sounds like they're getting ready to strip the place of assets and close up. It's like the "closed for renovations" sign a business puts up but it's really just out of business.
Did they pay you yet? Last I read you stopped going to work and you were ready to go to China. Did you go back to teach? |

My strike only lasted one day. They somehow managed to "find" my salary under a rock or something when it became clear that I would stand firm. Maybe the vacation is so they can justify paying for less than a full month... I don't know, they haven't told us its unpaid but I won't be surprised if I hear that on payday (2/ . |

I hate those "By the way, your vacation is in two weeks" crap. Even if you already took your vacation, this shouldn't be deducted from your pay. |

I know everywhere will be different, but what days off does your hagwon have for this holiday? I totally forgot to ask today and my boss is so scatty that she will probably forget to tell me until the day before if I don't remind her! Im crossing my fingers for 2 days off..... |

I, for one, don't want any days off except the 30th. Other than that, it's forced vacation. |

I mentioned that we will have Mon. 30th. off to some students and they replied that we will also have the 31st. off. I said the31st. isn't marked on the calendar as a red number day. So they whipped out their cell phones to show me I was wrong, sure enough all their calendars on their phones show the 31st. is also a day off. |

Hmmm. That's perplexing. Paid holiday? Guess I have some questions to ask my boss. With "korean time" being what it is, I could be finding out something too late. Know what I mean? |
