So let's say I was brought in to teach, with the promise of a visa once I arrived in country. Strung along for a few weeks, and let go without ever obtaining said visa. What would happend if I turned the school in for using illegals?

Would I (and other illegal teachers) be fined / deported / or jailed?
What would happend to the school - fines / hiring bans?

cheers

Why on earth would you want to waste your time. Your lucky if they flew you in for free without a visa. Gives you ample opportunity to look elsewhere now that you're there, and you'll get a better job. Say thank you to your employer.

If you don't work there anymore and they have illegals you could get them busted. I wouldn't want to do that to other foreigners unless I really hated the place.

Don't listen to this rotten scumbag, you don't want to get mixed up with the law in Korea, period. Especially as a foreigner because the first person they will bust is you...for working there in the first place, and than you will be deported. This idiot just admitted he would get the place busted if HE hated it. That shows complete disregard for his fellow teachers, and they would get busted and deported to.

Just make sure your next job isn't with this whack job.

Not that I would, I'm just asking for the hypotheticals. As in, "What's my hand?". I just want to know if I'm holding a straight or a pair of nines.

cheers

Why bother doing that huffdaddy?

The school once ratted out could just as easily rat you out as having been an illegal and involve you in your self-created puddle of crap.

Don't know all of the facts (very few in fact), but if he's(?) been strung along for a few weeks my guess is that means he's been working for free for three weeks or more (few). I doubt that if they paid for the airfare they would be also paying the guy for his work. 1.5 mill for a one-way to Korea seems a little steep, but like some others have said, don't bother. Put it behind you and consider it as a learning experience.

However, being an ex-employee you could perhaps give an anonymous tip. Being an ex-employee, I'm sure you'd be safe. I'd go with plan A personally.

Definitely not a free trip though.

There is a way to report the school and the teachers and get a reward. There is an immigration web site that offers rewards.

There's no risk at all in reporting a school to immigration. However, you should think carefully about whether you want to seriously mess up the lives of some new and niave foreigners who are in the same mess you were in.

I say screw unto others as they have screwed unto you - though preferably not to a fresh off the boat newbie.

Seriously, at least half these hogwans are scams that should be put out of business.

My previous school stalled my visa run indefinately. I had to leave the country in the end...minus a months wages. The only reason I didn't get them busted was that I didn't wanted other teachers getting busted. I'm not in SK at the moment, but I've made it clear to recruiters and potential employers that I wont do a single days work without a visa. No visa = no rights.
