I thought I'd start this thread as a "thank you" to someone who made a contribution to my "Romantic Restaurants?" thread.

I liked Casa Maya. It first opened near Hankuk University, relocated to Apgujeong, and now I think it's somewhere around Hongik University/Hongdae.

I don't mean to be a snob, but if you're not from the Southwestern part of the US, I can't seriously take your recommendations for Mexican food. I've been to too many bad ones in Southern California alone! |

Do you live in South Korea?
If you do, then you would understand what I mean when I say, "Beggars can't be choosers," Brainiac. |

Exactly. When you call Mexican food "good" in Korea, you're likely speaking in a highly relative sense. Good for Korea. The Mexican place (Chilil Chili's) at the Noksapyeong station is about as close as you're going to get, I think. |

Good Mexican food is oxymoronic. The most overrated food in the world. |

Fair enough. The enchiladas were edible at Geckos. Nothing I had at Panchos was. The Mexican place heading towards Phillie's was simply terrible, Bennigan's was not bad and the best I've had in Korea were the soft steak tacos at Taco Bell on the base at Yongsan (which I admit is pretty sad)! I'd be willing to give another place a try if I thought the person recommending the place knew what he was talking about, say someone who has experience with the Tex-Mex/Mexican food of the Southwest US. |

It's not that its something to rate like a wine or a movie; I mean, who could love a food that gave you gas and heart burn. But it is addictive in that weird, indescribable way. I used to go to Singaporean restaurants in Korea for the celantro fix, looking the fool with some weed-like substance hanging out of my maw. |

I concur and second that!!!

Heart burn you say? Sounds like a personal problem to me and there's little doubt that eating Korean food will do the same to you.
Gas you say? Sounds like you need to lay off the beans then or take some beano before your meal. You don't have to eat beans with every Mexican meal. Try Fajitas, enchiladas, nachos minus beans or even plain ole beef tacos.
Addictive? No it's just preferance and personal taste. Try living in southern Arizona and you'll learn to appreciate REAL authentic Mexican food with excellent classy restaurants run by REAL Mexicans. I was raised on Mexican food so I can't understand your reasoning.
Feast your eyes.... don't drool... lol

Some days, I could just settle for Toco Hell. Purist is not an option in Korea where I have met one Mexican in the 10 plus years I have lived here.
That reminds me, the second level of the Lotte World theme park seems to be THE Mexican hang out (meaning, I usually see three or more Mexicans there at any one time, which is like 300% more than I usually see). They seem to own some of the shops or vendor stalls there, but the food at the one Mexican restaurant there is passingly good. I do make it a point to go there every time I go to Lotte World, when I do. I have no number.
Actually, I did see one Indian restaurant near the Mosque in Itaewon, and the Star Supermarket (basement of Tower Palace apartments in Gangnam) had an Indian fast food stall. The latter was much better. Again, no numbers for either. I have a thing for Indian food too, but much, much more rare in Korea than even Mexican restaurants.
I hope people add to that restaurants list in that ONE thread so that I don't (we don't) all have to go looking all the time 10 minutes before we rush out the door to the restaurant and needing that phone number or name or direction~ |
