I teach 4th grade in an elementary school. (Yes, I'm one of those EPIKs) As the summer break is almost upon us many students are even less interested in studying than they usually are.

This morning a Korean teacher suggested that my class might like to watch a video, something they have never done in my class before. In a moment of weakness I said "ok". To my absolute amazment Rolling Eyes the Korean teacher produced a Korean language sex education video.

Having had to discover the ins and outs of sex by trial and error, fortunately with no major errors, I'm in favour of sex education in schools. However, I don't think an English langauge class is the right place for this topic, especially as it was entirely in Korean. What do other people think ?

Hahaha!!! The nearest I've come to teaching sex education was selecting a "teenage body changes" passage out of the middle school discussion topic book. However I binned it a few minutes before as my class would no way have been able yo cope with it, probably let alone me!!
You must be like me TJ who discovered sex more or less by accident as I never had a formal education in it!!!!
Bizarrely, I'm generally against sex education in schools. I think its the role of parents to do this..I think in the school system, telling the kids so much so soon is tantamount to sanctioning early experimentation. Hence, in Places like England they started with a few diagrams- and now that all their 16 yr olds are pushing prams, they've had to start handing out contraceptives alongside exercise books..

Flutieflakes ...... no, I wasn't complaining about not having to teach. In fact I had everything prepared and was ready to roll. What I was querying was the suitability of a Korean language sex education video in an English language class.

Is it true they do it sideways?

Nice "slippery slope" thinking.

Yep keep it simple and they'll take an interest in English.

Um, one of my boring scripts:

Oops Wrong One!!!!!!!!! Story By Andrew / Anda.

1. Bae. Its not true is it?
2. Joo. Yeah tell us it isnt true!
3. Ying. Come on Chul! Tell us that Soon is still, one of us!
4. Chul. Sorry mates but its true! Soon isnt one of us any longer!
5. Ying. It must be like a nightmare for him, um, I mean her!
6. Chul. Well he cant say that he wasnt warned! Dad told him before he
left to study in the States to only use Korean doctors if he got
sick or had an accident.
7. Ying. To be fair, it was that hospital orderlys fault, not the doctors!
8. Chul. Yeah, I suppose youre right but I still think that the relieving
specialist should have recognized that my brother wasnt
Japanese!
9. Ying. We all look the same to them I hear! Hows he, I mean hows she
taking it?
10. Chul. How would you feel if you woke up and found out that you no
longer had your manhood but you were same, same as your
sister!
11. Ying. Yuck, it would be worse than death, Id say!
12. Chul. That Japanese bloke was rich, so hed ordered the works! A
vagina, boobs plus an Adams Apple Shaving job along with
some plastic surgery makeup work. A total transgender sex
change. So my brother got the works, all one hundred thousand
dollars worth.
13. Ying. And the Japanese bloke got an appendix operation preformed
on him.
14. Chul. I bet it was a let down for him when he looked in the mirror and
couldnt see any difference after spending a hundred grand but
my brother was the one that got the super shock when he went
to the toilet after he woke up from the operation. Poor Soon, Um
I mean poor rich Soon!
15. Ying. How much compensation are they going to pay your brother?
16. Chul. It sounds like he might get up to twenty million dollars paid to
him! They really picked the wrong Uni student to make a mistake
on.
17. Ying. Yeah Ill say! Soon is studying international law at Uni isnt he
and your fathers a big time local lawyer as well, right?
18. Chul. Thats right, the hospital tried to trick my brother into accepting
a million dollars up front and signing a legal paper that would
have stopped my brother from taking any legal action.
19. Ying. Hows Soons girlfriend taking it?
20. Chul. She cried a lot, but told Soon that he or as youd say that she
could be a girlfriend to her but that she couldnt accept him any
longer as her boyfriend.
21. Ying. I can understand that after all Soons girlfriend isnt a lesbian is
she? Yuck, kissing someone thats the same sex, no thanks!
22. Chul. Youre not the slightest bit understanding are you? I wouldnt
want you as my best friend, thats for sure!
23. Ying. Well you just said yourself that Soon isnt any longer one of us!
But yeah, it must be tough to find out that youve just joined the
opposite sex because a hospital orderly made a mix up with the
theater trolleys (wheeled hospital beds).
24. Chul. Yes, apparently the Japanese bloke got off his trolley and went
to the toilet and got onto the wrong trolley when he returned
from the toot (toilet). Another orderly brought my brother to the
theater and the theater orderly told my brother to move onto the
Japanese fellows trolley thinking that it was my brothers
trolley so that the ward orderly could take the ward trolley back
so it was a rather innocent mistake really!
25. Ying. So thats how the name mix-up occurred?
26. Chul. Yes thats how my brother got changed into a girl!
27. Ying. How are your parents and sister taking it?
28. Chul. Dads been pretty understanding, moms been popping
sedatives and sis is having the time of her life stirring poor
Soon cause he always used to stir sis about her being a useless
girl and good for nothing except becoming a homemaker!
29. Ying. Your sister is pretty smart isnt she?
30. Chul. Yep, thats right! Thats why Soon used to try to stir Sis when
she got better marks than him at high school most of the time!
31. Ying. So shes getting back at him now that hes nothing but a mere
girl also, huh?
32. Chul. Yes! Soon has promised that hell buy her a nice apartment if
she gets off his back! Sis seems happy with the offer but she
got Soon to put his offer in writing.
33. Ying. You said that your mom is taking it hard?
34. Chul. Yeah, mom is funny! Shes made me promise that I never have
a medical operation without either her or dad there to see that
nothing goes wrong. Moms always been proud of providing dad
with two sons and shes always telling her friends about how
lucky she is to have two boys. Naturally sis doesnt agree with
mom and will tell mom that her thinking is old fashioned and
now that brains are required more for work that its better to
have girls then boys.
35. Ying. Do you think that Soon will be able to cope with his sex change
Chul?
36. Chul. It isnt going to be easy for him naturally but seeing that hell
get so much compensation and be able to work as he wishes
then I think hell survive. Soon told me that theres no way that
hell ever start dating men or dressing as a woman. Soon said
hell look for a nice woman that just wants a platonic
relationship.
37. Ying. Well I hope things work for him!

That's funny. Smile

I was thinking that if they were using korean smut as a way to learn about sex, they'll be pretty shocked to find there's something under the tighty whities.

Screw the tapes. The boys ask about phoenixes, and I deliver the education via boobieage.

That sounds more fucked up than it really is.

Hey TJ, did the Korean teacher stick around while the tape was being played, or did he/she just hand you it and say 'good luck'? If the latter, maybe they were killing two birds with one stone [e.g. dodging a bullet and passing the buck].

[talk about mixing your metaphors!]

?

http://www.agi-usa.org/pubs/fb_teen_sex.html

Teen pregnancy rates are much higher in the United States than in many other developed countries--twice as high as in England and Wales or Canada, and nine times as high as in the Netherlands or Japan.

Ironically, the Netherlands have one of the most forward sex ed programs in the world, and they start into it before nearly every other country.

Studies have shown over and over education both delays sexual activity and reduces the number of pregnancies after choosing to become sexually active.

Your slipperly slope argument is both incorrect in its foundation and its known execution.

Japan was mentioned as having a low teen pregnancy rate. However, the fact is that in Japan abortion is the most common method of birth control for unmarried women.

Now, I'm not promoting a view for or against abortion, and I definitely don't know if abortions are common in the Netherlands or not, but I am saying that sometimes drawing conclusions from correlational research can be risky to say the least. IE in Japan's case the teen pregnancy rate probably has very little to do with sex education, but more do with the availablitity of a socially acceptable and commonly practiced method of birth control.

I read in a magazine that 78% of first Korean sexual encounters happen by accident, when the couple trip over roller skates and fall onto the bed in an awkward position..
44% of teenage pregnancies are attributed to Koreans habit of leaving roller skates lying around, the reporter said.
