|
|
Hey Guys,
My resloution this year is to be as good to my body as possible.
I've been looking around for a whole foods store, without much look.
What I'm looking for:
Someplace that carries organic Chicken, Beef, Lamb, Fish..anything but pork, basically.
Also, someplace with organic produce, juice, etc, and maybe even snack foods..(chips/salsa)
Since my Hangul is pretty basic, I have trouble deciding what I can trust, and what is just fancy packaging.
I know I'll pay a pretty penny for it, but if I lay back on drinking too, it shouldn't be a problem.
Thanks

There is a place near apgujeong station called New Zealand something something. It's green. They do have a lot of organic products there. I recognize some of them from home. Galleria, again in apgujeong, also have a small organic foods section. Probably a lot of hyundai stores do as well. I know costco has organic cereal but I don't know about anything else.
As for meat in any of these places, I don't know. |

OK, I know this isn't going to further my cause, but I had to comment..
How come conversational, hypothetical posts which don't NEED answering (such as "So, is this it for winter??") get TONS of responses, but posts which ask useful questions usually go ignored?
I'm not just referring to my post, but this board in general.
Everytime I see a post and think "Hey, great question, I wish someone would answer it"...it usually goes unanswered, or is met with a paltry one or two responses.
Conversely, every moan gets shot down with 4 counter moans, and every random thought gets matched with 8 other random thoughts.
Sweet board, huh?
Rant over. |

There are several sources of organic food. I live in Bundang so mostly I can speak to what's down here. The New Zealand place mentioned in the above post is HealGreen; there's one in Apgujeong and one here in Bundang, in Jeongja-dong. The Bundang store isn't large but they're one of my regular grocery spots. Also in Bundang, the supermarket at Samsung Plaza (Seohyeon Station) has some organic stuff -- not lots but it's there. There's a store called Orga in Gangnam (I think), about a 15-minute walk from the SNU subway station. I trekked up there one day in the dead heat of summer and was disappointed to find that they had very little HealGreen didn't. Save yourself a hike and go to Apgujeong or Bundang. There's probably more in Apgujeong but I rarely go there so I don't know; I'm doing okay with what I can get down here in the burbs. PM me if you need more info, or more specific directions. |

Because very few people want to spend the extra cash for organic food thus not being able to answer your thread. That would be my guess. |

Well, it's nowhere near Seoul. But in Osan, across the street from City Hall is a little organic food shop. I think it's next to the banchan store. |

Organic is a scam. You want to live and eat better, just eat more fruits and veggies and fish. Use the money you save by not paying a premium on organic food (which has no proven benefit over the exact same item farmed in a non-organic fashion) and join a gym. |

Thanks for the great answers, DJ, A_I, and Faron.
Mindmetoo, I wasn't just referring to my post, but to pretty much 90% of posts that ask useful questions. Whenever I see a post that I can answer (which for now is next to nothing, as I am new to Korea), I answer it.
For some odd reason, I don't feel the need to be the 85th respondee to
"So, um, Korea sucks, and heres why" type posts. Maybe its the whole trying to have a life thing.
As for organic being a scam, thats your own opinion.
Personally, I'd rather avoid food that has 10 ingredients not found in nature.
Especially if said ingredients are mild toxins.

The Emart store in Yongsan station has an organic food section. It looks like it has a precent decent selection of fruits, veggies, bread, etc. |

SwimminThruAsia Your point is a good one. I would say that you give it a little more time before you pull out the big guns. To get an intelligent response, you might want to give it a day or two. I know Korean culture is in to bali bali~ but most here on the board are probably not Korean. In addition, on Friday evening, most are probably out drinking or they're drunken' posting and probably want to let off a little steam.
BTW, welcome to Korea. |

prove the benefits.
if nobel prize winning chemist/agriculturist and father of the green revolution calls bullshiit on it, i think im going to believe him, and not some hippy peddling an apple that took a ton of manure and twice the soil to grow. real environmental, man.
anyway, the reason no one answered your post if because many dont want to spend on a mint on a scam and there are just not that many places in korea that have these types of stores. |

I think Mindmetoo is a little upset because there seems to be alot of newbies who have been asking questions that can be found in the FAQ. I'm sure your question wouldn't be found there but mindmetoo does have a point about the whole goto the gym and eat lots of veggies. I could put an organic label on my stuff and sell it for twice the price too. If it's a mental thing, then go ahead and pay twice the price.....your money. |

Faron,
You're absolutely right, I was kind of a jerk in my rant.
I was having a bad night, and I apologize.
One more thing I thought I should bring up in my argument..
I've had acid reflux since I was 12..I think I am genetically inclined towards acidity. When I was growing up, we always ate very "healthy" in my house..typical middle class American fare. 3 squares a day..Kellogs, toast, fruit salad in the AM, Turkey and cheese with veggie sandwich for lunch, and a typical, conventional Meat, starch and veggie dinner. My father, bless his heart, is a Yankee. He won't buy anything unless its on sale, and he has double coupons. Because of that, all of our veggies were Del Monte, all our OJ Tropicana, etc etc. During this time, I had frequent heartburn, upset stomach, and bathroom issues, along with headaches, jumpiness, and "ADD."
I firmly believe that all large corporations involved in mass food production use science to make their food as cheaply as possible. It might taste great, but you have no idea whats in it, and what makes it taste the way it does. Any company which is publicly traded has a fiscal responsibility to make the most profit possible for the people who have bought into it...and for this reason, I try to avoid eating their products.
I know I sound like a "health nut," but if you're going to be any kind of nut, why not take care of your body? I'll buy cheap clothes, cheap household goods, and I got my computer on a clearance sale. Yea, they suck, but I deal. I shouldn't and don't deal with inferior quality things in my diet, or at least I haven't in the past month...and I feel fantastic.
That's just my two cents.
Sorry if I offended anyone, it wasn't my intention. Happy posting.
