Mario Bava, Dario Argento, Lucio Fulci - Hollywood has nothing on these gods.

Thank you.

I'm not Italian, by the way - just telling it like it is.

Other obvious ones: Frederico Fellini, Roberto Rossellini, Roberto Benigni (funny actor too)

As well as: Ermanno Olmi, Vittorio Taviani, Luchino Visconti.....

These are not filmmakers that rely on special effects and flash; it's all about the stories they tell.
Good stuff.

Italian filmmakers the best? Why is yr. username a homage to a Japanese director then? The Italians made some good gore/slasher flicks a long time ago. Nowadays, Japanese cinema kicks all contenders in the nuts.

What about Atom Egoyan? He's Armenian-Canadian. François Truffaut and Jean Luc Godard? French. Charlie Chaplin? British. Ingmar Bergman? Swede. Louis Bunuel? Spaniard. Denys Arcand? Canadian/Quebecois. Akira Kurosawa? Japanese. And let's not forget the many great American film makers, too.

... or what about the great Germans like Lang, Murnau, Lubitsch or Riefenstahl?

... and the Russians? You can't make a list of all time greats without the least bit of mentioning Eisenstein and Vertov.

This thread is so pretentious. Oh, look at me! I know more than one European director. They are great because I know about them and you don't.

Can anyone argue against of my top three directors; in no particular order, Kubrick, Scorcese, Hitchcock?

Some of us are quite capable of forming our own opinions, thank you. There's no Asians in that list, either. No Kurasawa, no Miike, no Tsui Hark, etc, etc.
